At the playground, anything could happen. There, dozens of children's imagination ignited, endless possibilities of what could be real coming to life. In the sandbox, they played in the sand with their buckets and some holding water, trying to build sandcastles. On the monkey bars, ruled by the older kids, they cheered for whoever could get across without falling. Some even played a game of pirates, chasing each other with sticks, using the chips from the playground, gently throwing it, pretending it was a canon.
Everything seemed lively; giggles and laughter spreading, making the adults even crack a smile, warmth in their eyes as they saw the happiness that radiated off the children. Even the sun was smiling, it's rays of warmth blazing down among them as the warm summer breeze blew past them.
Yet, he couldn't bring himself to join them. He sat alone in a far away tree under the shade, his back against the bark that poked his skin as he no longer faced the playground, observing from afar. The young boy held his frown, picking at the ground underneath him as sweat from the hot day prickled down his neck, his once pale cheeks now the color of a blooming red rose.
His black hair stuck onto his forehead, the result after being outside in the heat for over an hour, just sitting under the tree. Even though he'd been the one to ask to be at the playground that was just around the block, he never did anything. Instead, he sat there alone, under the shade of the tree everyday, afraid to interact with the other children.
He was shy. He was the boy that sat at the back of the classroom, avoiding speaking up or raising his hand, even if he got called on or knew the answer. He always knew the answer, the answer to every problem they did in their class, yet he never once dared to open his mouth, afraid of being judged by the students, even if they judged his silence.
It hurt him, hurt to be like that, but he never changing his ways. He grew up being homeschooled until he was eight, studying countless hours in countless nights. So, he shut himself out as soon as he got transferred in the second semester of school, too timid to greet the other students, his head always lowered.
During recess, even then he watched from afar, sitting under the shade of the tree, sometimes finishing his lunch. He kept to himself, even if the lonely feeling never wavered, even if it hurt him. Sometimes, he wanted to speak, to go play with the other kids, but it was already too late and he needed to focus on his studying. Despite being only twelve-years-old, he was already looking at his future with a mind of maturity.
He deemed he would be stuck in his little bubble for the rest of his life, be seen as the outcast and loner that students would say to stay away from, for he never spoke to anyway. From that, everyone misinterpreted his silent action, claiming him to be selfish and smart because they knew he passed every test with ease, even if it was deemed difficult.
