Jimin was adamant that he would find out my father's sexual preference. I wanted to curl up and die at the mere thought of asking him crude questions that Jimin intends on throwing into the conversation.
"Ahjussi, may I ask you something?"
Appa put down the paper he was reading and looked up.
"Sure Jimin-ssi. Go ahead."
I was a nervous wreck, biting my fingers and watching Jimin with crazed eyes. Appa was going to kill us. I was sure of it.
"Ahjussi, how would someone know if they're gay or not?"
Although my father had never physically struck me in his life, I was sure this time would be an exception. This is it! Here comes the slap! I cringed, waiting for him to strike Jimin.
Appa took off his reading glasses and wiped them before perching them back onto his nose thoughtfully.
"Well, I suppose it would be different for everyone. It depends on a person's experiences and encounters in life that would cause them to question their sexuality in the first place. As humans, we're conditioned to believe in male and female gender as exclusive. And that is correct scientifically. But love, feelings and emotions are very different from physicality.
Sexuality or the feeling of wanting to engage in a sexual relationship with someone of the same sex, can only be determined by your emotions. Many people believe that they were born gay, for want of a better word. But others believe their life experiences and feelings played a bigger part in determination."
It was the longest speech I'd ever heard my appa make. I was stunned. I mean, I know he's intelligent; he's a surgeon for crying out loud. But I never knew the depth of knowledge he has for certain things. I found that I was rather put out that he'd never spoken to me like this before.
"Ahjussi, what would you determine your own sexuality to be then?"
My jaw dropped and the popcorn I was eating, trailed down my chin. Jimin had just blurted it out like that.
"Well, I would determine myself as, what do you youngsters call it today? Pansexual."
I think I threw up in my mouth a little. I never expected that. I had done some research on this topic for science class and I was aware of some things. And well, Google was on hand to answer almost everything. But to hear my father speak about his own sexuality like he was talking about the weather, had caught me offguard.
"Thanks Ahjussi. I really appreciate your frankness."
"I'm happy to help Jimin. And may I ask, are you questioning your own sexuality? Is that why you have these questions?"
"No ahjussi. Just a curious teenager I guess. I'm pretty sure I'm straight as a board."
They both laughed at their intimate joke. I felt totally left out. I pouted and looked at the t.v. But Jimin wasn't done.
"Ahjussi, can I ask you a more personal question? I don't want to be rude or anything and offend you."
My father lowered his paper for the second time today and gave Jimin his full attention.
"Now, what could be more personal than my sexuality?"
They both laughed lightly and I choked on my popcorn.
"How come you never married again after Taehyung's mom passed on?"
My heart was racing. This was treading different waters altogether. Yet again, my father surprised me. He smiled widely.
"I guess I never really thought about it. Or more truthfully, never had the time to date and meet new people. But I wouldn't be averse to it. Although, I'd probably have to date them at 1 in the morning or something. My schedule is always all over the place. It would have to be someone who could understand that."
"So, you're saying, if you met someone in your own field of work, it might work out then?"
"I suppose it would." He thought on that quietly.
"Have you tried a dating app?"
My father laughed lightly.
"I'm sure Taehyung can attest to my complete lack of understanding technology."
"But Ahjussi, it's so easy these days. I could set it up for you in under 3 minutes."
My father raised his eyebrows.
"Really? I had no idea it would be that easy."
"Sure. You wanna try it out?"
I think I was slowly turning blue. Cardiac arrest. Isn't that what it's called? Yes. I was sure I was going into cardiac arrest. This was anything beyond what Jimin and I had discussed. I think I shouldn't have been surprised by now with the way my father was behaving.
"Well, if it's that easy. Why not?"
Jimin clapped his hands happily and skipped to the table to retrieve my laptop. He sat down next to my father and began setting up my father's profile. I scooted over to have a look at what he was doing.
My father was fascinated. Jimin had truly set it all up in under 3 minutes. All he needed now was a profile picture and a short biography. I took out my phone and clicked a picture of appa. He looked really good. He's kept himself in shape all these years. His muscles strained at his shirt and his face looked fresh and young. But he decided against using a picture and made a pseudonym instead of his correct name. Jimin said it was actually better that way in order to avoid creeps who roamed the net.

"I'm writing a little about you. You can edit it as you wish," Jimin said.
My father looked it over and added a few things until he was satisfied. Jimin saved the profile and appa got a notification in his phone to complete it by clicking on his email. He was now ready to join the modern age.
Jimin downloaded the app onto appa's phone and taught him how to navigate it. He caught on easily, surprising himself again.
"Taehyunggie, why have you never taught me how easy it is to do all these things before?"
I looked at him sheepishly.
"I never thought you were ever interested in this stuff before appa. You still read the newspaper the old fashioned way and drive your beat up Volvo."
"Well, maybe it's time for a change in life. What do you say Jimin-ssi?"
"Definitely ahjussi!" And they high-fived. I went back to my seat and ate my popcorn sullenly, wondering who this man was and what had he done to my appa.
