richie opened the door and stepped out onto the wet ground. his right foot landed right into a puddle.

"shit!" he could feel the water in his sock now.

"come on richie. lets go see him." veronica walked past him.

richie followed her into the jail where their father was incarcerated. they went through security, they filled out forms, and they went through metal detectors. the brunetted boy was surprised but also glad that they didn't get any "special service" because that was the type of thing their father did. richie found it annoying but he knew that his father owned the jail and could fire anyone that disobeyed him. even if any of it was illegal hiram lodge would always find a way to get what he wants.

"richie! stop daydreaming."

"sorry!"

they sat down in front of the glass and waited. they had been there for a few minutes when they saw their father walk in and sit down on the other side of the glass. he picked up the phone and veronica did the same.

"mija!" their father said with a smile, "and... richie." the smile faded.

richie always knew that his father preferred his older sister over him. it didn't really bother him as much as it should have. it usually didn't bother him as much as it should have. veronica was talking to their dad and didn't seem to notice when richie got up and started to walk away.

"richie!" veronica said. "where are you going!?"

"i'm tired of him treating me like shit. i'm out." richie replied.

"bu-" veronica started.

"just leave him," hiram said to her.

she wanted to go after him at first but he convinced her that they had more important things to worry about than richie.

richie didn't know why he felt this sudden rush of anger but he knew that seeing his father was the last thing he wanted to do today. he had started walking and now he was at betty's house and he was soaked beacause the snow had started coming down harder. he rang the doorbell and waited.

the door opened and he saw the shorter boy's face appear.

"oh, hey richie," he said grinning.

"long time no see eds," richie said jokingly because they had just seen each other earlier this morning.

"richie. don't call me eds."

richie hadn't called him "eds" since middle school so eddie was a little flustered.

eddie and richie had been extremely close only a few years ago but they had seen each other a lot less often when they had gone to separate high schools.

"you know you love it." eddie rolled his eyes.

"anyways, why did you show up at my house completely soaked?" eddie asked.

"umm, just some family business."

"do you want to talk about it?" Eddie saw that richie had gotten noticeably angrier when he had said family business.

"not really. it doesn't matter," richie changed the subject. "hey eds, you wanna go into town? i've got something i need to pick up."

"yeah sure." eddie was still a little worried but he didn't want to bother richie so he didn't bring it up again. "i'll drive."

"great." said richie with a smile.
