'Hello'
Opal.
'Oh er hi'
'I was just wondering, could I just ask you something? It's just...'
'QUIET!!!!!' Twitchy-Nose screeched, her nose now turning purple with the effort.
'Old bat' I mutter, not meaning for anyone to hear. Next to me, Opal giggles. Here I am confused. As clearly stated by girls at my old school, I am not funny. I just make comments to myself. It is my only form of rebellion, seeing as my shyness has blocked any other option.
'Its just,..well you have sparks going off around you' I hiss discreetly ( I hope) 'and um,.. Why?' Alarm flits across her face for a brief moment, before being replaced with a smirk. She taps her nose with an index finger.Oh, frustration!!
Normally, I shrink away from anyone I don't know, and avoid them, preferring to huddle in a corner with a good book. Yet.......I can't describe how it feels, she just has a hold on me - the buzzing in my head intensifies near her so much that I can hardly think - and that infuriating smirk that tells me that she knows something.
At lunchtime I block her path with a determined look on my face. Well. As far as I can tell it looks determined, but I guess you never know.
'Look. What. Are. They?!' I practically yell at her.
My poor voice, that's probably the loudest it has ever had to go.
Opal gave me one long look before replying,
'What do you hear, Zoe?'
Ok, creepy question.
'That not what I asked'
Back to timid mouse voice, way to go, me.
'I know, but I think you know what I mean. Do you ever hear voices in your head? Or a slight buzzing?'
Freak out mode activating.
'Well...um.....er.....maybe..?'
'This might sound crazy, but you're hearing people's thoughts'
Brain self-destruct in 10, 9, 8,..
'Try focusing on the buzzing, try find something beyond the white noise.'
I choose not to answer. Yeah, I've always been Mrs McWierdo, yet, I still felt normal, to some extent. Not some freak who can hear thoughts.
Still, what choice do I have? I close my eyes and hear the general buzz wrapped around my brain like a grey blanket. I gently unwound it and delved into it, trying to find something that actually made sense to me. I am about to give up, when I catch a faint voice, too faint to be Opal, standing coolly by my side. Pip's tail thumped against my leg imitating my heart as I managed to catch the words.
'Come on, you can, I knew I wasn't the only one'
Opal's thoughts.
I can hear them.
I am an almost friendless freak who can hear thoughts.
