The breakfast was quiet and Sophie was staring down at her croissant with little interest in conversation. Mads smiled at her.
After he had told her about his wife she had felt dirty, like she had been Mads' bit on the side, although now she had time to think about it she kind of understood. It wasn't as if she had been through a divorce before and she certainly didn't have much experience in the boyfriend department so she didn't really have anything to compare this too, that was apart from the movies, all those romantic comedies she had watched with Jan while they were growing up, they all said the same thing: a couple had to go through a tough patch in order for them to grow stronger. But her and Mads weren't a couple, they had just been two people who had hit it off and she had hit the ground.
“Sophie?”
She hummed, looking up from her pastry with an expression that was neither amused nor bemused, it was a vacant expression that told Mads she wasn't a hundred percent in the room. He had her attention though and he was damn sure that he was going to make her feel like a goddess.
“Are you enjoying your croissant?”
She nodded,
“Yes thank you.”
He felt a pang in his chest. How could he have made her feel this way? He desperately craved the bubbly Sophie back but was aware that he didn't have long before he had to be at the attorney's office.
An idea struck him.
“Good. Look, Sophie, I didn't mean to make you feel this way about me but I have to tell you that my wife is nearly out of my life. All the feelings I had for her have long gone.”
“Don't you even feel the smallest bit angry?”
“Not really, she's taking me for every penny but I couldn't care less. It bugged me in the beginning because I felt like I had a sense of entitlement but when I realised all these things that I was holding onto were nothing but materials, I let them go. She can have them.”
Sophie was paying more attention to Mads now, her eyes losing that glaze.
“So you don't want to get back with her?”
Mads shook his head.
“No. After the trust had gone, the love soon dissipated.”
“I'm glad you told me that Mads.” Sophie smiled weakly, “otherwise I would have been worrying about that all day at work.”
“I will always tell you the truth Sophie.”
“Thanks Mads.”
“My pleasure. Now, you've been playing around with that croissant for nearly twenty minutes now, how about a real breakfast?”
“What do you suggest?”
“I'll be right back.” Mads got up from his seat, carefully placing his napkin on the table.
*
Sophie had never felt more full in her life.
Mads had not skipped out on anything. Bacon, hash browns, sausages, beans, you name it, it was there.
“I can't remember the last time I had a full English breakfast.”
“Me either. But that was good.” Mads rubbed his full belly, causing Sophie to laugh.
Sophie looked at her watch.
“Oh! We better go! I have to be at work in ten minutes.”
Mads took care of the bill as Sophie walked to the car.
As Sophie watched through the glass of the restaurant she watched Mads. She hadn't felt this consumed by someone since, well, Charlie. Something inside her had ignited and burnt hot in her chest. Maybe it was indigestion, she thought.
“I will see you later, my darling.” Mads said, placing a tender kiss on Sophie's lips before she climbed out of the car. She watched the car as it sped off down the road. There it was again, that burning sensation.
