“Earth to Tina!” Katie said loudly, trying to get back the attention of her friend.

Several students in the cafeteria looked at her questioningly but she took no notice. She straightened her back and narrowed her eyes on her friend.

“You know if you’re not interested to listen, you can just tell me,” Katie complained.

Tina looked at her friend, as if she had just realized that she was there. Tina smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry Kate. I’m just tired,” Tina said softly, rubbing her eyes.

Katie rolled her eyes at her friend, “You know, you need to give yourself a break. All these part-time jobs are going to kill you.”

Tina let out a heavy sigh. Katie would never understand. Her friend didn’t have to shoulder the school tuition all on her own. She didn’t have a family to feed and a sick mother to take care of. She was, after all, the daughter of the owner of the school.

Easy for you to say. Tina thought.

Tina had already forgotten how she became friends with Katie.

All she knew was why.

Katie could never get along with the other students in the school. She was a little too loud and egoistic and self-obsessed for her own good. No one but their little gang of four could stand her attitude.

They didn’t have a choice anyway.

“Don’t talk about something you don’t understand Kate,” said Ella, another member of their little gang. Tina followed Ella’s carefree movement with her eyes. Her friend looked as tough as ever. Ella sipped her cola and looked at Tina.

“Just so you know, Miss I-Have-No-Time-For-That, Katie has been talking about Troy for almost half an hour now and you just look like you didn’t hear a single thing she said,” Ella explained, her eyes shining with amusement.

“The transferee?” asked Tina. “But you already have a boyfriend Kate. What about Gabby?”

Ella laughed at what Tina said. She turned to Katie and teased her, quirking her eyebrows repeatedly, “You’re gonna let me have your dearest Gabby then?”

Katie pushed Ella away from her, looking disgusted, “No way! You can’t have my Gabby, Gabriella! Just because your names sound alike doesn’t mean you’re meant to be together.” She crossed her arms tightly and scoffed at the other two.

“I was just appreciating beauty, you know? Who wouldn’t notice someone so hot and gorgeous? You’d have to be double blind,” Katie explained.

Double blind?” Ella queried, raising her eyebrows.

“Yeah. Like double dead. You know. Stuffs like that,” Katie said rather defensively. Ella laughed merrily at what Katie said.
