The streets of Gotham were rather upsetting and no kindness was to be found anywhere. You just got back from your job and you had a rough day. You weren't expecting the day to get better until you came across a frail man dressed in a clown suit dancing to music a nearby piano player was playing.

The man saw you 'down in the dumps' and decided to motion you his direction. You were confused so you stood there. The man finally had enough courage to walk over to you.

He started dancing relentlessly hoping to cheer you up. You let out a cute little giggle which only encouraged him to show more emotion in his dance. "Feel better darling?" He asked bent over out of breath.

After a few more laughs you brought yourself to answer the question. "Yeah a lot better thank you--Carnival?" You replied as you looked at his name tag.

"Oh I'm A-Arthur Fleck, Carnival is my clown name." He couldn't help but blush. "Hey m-ma-maybe we could grab coffee after my shift?" Arthur asked gently trying not to pressure you. "I-its okay if no" He quickly added.

"No I'd like that, yeah!" You had replied enthusiastically.

"Alright!" His tone lightened up. "I'm almost finished I just have about 30 or so minutes left."

"I'll watch! You look so adorable with your clown outfit and your peppy dances!" You added with a giggle. Arthur's expression wasn't as dull as it seemed, you made him happy. You saw a bench nearby and watched him dance. Arthur started doing more tricks with his sign trying to impress you.

"Way to go Arthur!" You shouted with a cheerful wave

He turned around and offered you a gentle and kind smile. God his smile could light up a room. It was so unique and so different then just a fake smile you'd see around the streets of Gotham. A blush formed on your face and you couldn't help but to smile back. Suddenly, A group of kids came running towards your defenseless Arthur. They took his sign and bolted. Arthur looked at you and ran after them.

You quickly got up from your seat and ran. You ran after them like a lion chasing its prey. However, reality hit and your heel got caught in a sewer drain. 'Fuck' You would mouth. A few pulls and pushes later you'd soon free yourself. A cry for help from afar struck your ears.

"ARTHUR?" You had shouted hoping to hear him reply.

Nothing. So you tried again.

"Arthur!" You had shouted louder until you heard a faint cry. You followed the weak whimper until you reached a broken sign, and a man crying in the alleyway. He was pawing at his flower hanging from his outfit. You had rushed over to him and kneeled beside his weak body. Your skirt had gotten wet from the fresh rain water but you didn't care.

"I-m so sorry" Arthur had replied with a small whimper. His tone had became weak. Who could do this to such a sweet man? Gotham was filled with Garbage people - personalities matching the scent of the trash bags you would pass.

"Shh" You stroked his hair with one hand and held his head up with your other.

"You- you didn't have to come for me, i'm used to this." A tear fell from his delicate and bruised cheek. He looked up and you and gave you another gentle smile.

"I-I'm sorry I couldn't help you.." Your watery eyes finally erupted into tears, falling down into the puddles. You sat there stroking his hair and telling him it was going to be okay. He was so thankful to have you there with him. His limp body still laying in the alley way-squirming trying to get up.

"Hey Hey its okay, you don't have to get up- I'll protect you." You offered him a gentle smile and he laid there still- appreciating your presence.

After a while, he finally managed to get up and gave you a kiss on the cheek. His nose was still bloody, his body was still limp and shaky but you managed to take him home. Arthur took the keys out of his pocket and unlocked the door. He motioned his hand for you to join him inside.

"Oh, are you sure?" You had asked politely.

"Yes, its only fair that I treat my hero to a nice dinner." Arthur couldn't stop smiling knowing someone in this god awful city cared for him.. him! He felt like he didn't deserve kindness since he was put down his whole life.

You walked into his apartment and observed everything. Suddenly, a voice crept from one of the rooms.

"Happy? Is that you?" A frail female voice asked.

"Yes mother, and I brought a guest home her name is-- I'm sorry I never caught your name?" Arthur had asked. You felt embarrassed that this whole time you didn't tell him your name. god I'm such an idiot you thought.

'I'm y/n! Im so sorry I didn't tell you before, it must have slipped my mind." You put your hand on his shoulder and gave him a kiss on the cheek. Immediately, he blushed and gave you a hug.

"Thank you." Arthur replied with his eyes watering. He felt loved and cared for- and no one in Gotham was kind enough to show him what he was lacking- until you came along. His guardian angel.
