My lab partner

"Today," my chemistry teacher, Mr. Wright, said with a grin, "Is a seat change."

I groaned, I hated seat changes. A seat change meant a new lab partner and I always got stuck with the popular kids who never pay attention and expect me to do all the work.

"Hey," my bestie, Dave, tapped me on the shoulder, "Maybe we'll finally get to sit together!" I rolled my eyes with a smile. Dave says that every time there's a seat change. We're never lab partners.

Mr. Wright began pointing out seats and announcing the partners.

About halfway down the first row he announces, "David Singer and James Doiley." Dave looks at me with a sad smile, next time, he whispers, and makes his way to his new seat.

It takes a while for Mr. Wright to call my name, he comes to the very back seat in about the middle row and declares, "Roberta Olsen and.." YES! I love the back row. Less people to stare at me. "Jessica Jones."
My stomach flips. My lab partner is Jessica Jones. My lab partner is Jessica Jones? My lab partner is Jessica Jones! Oh no. She's going to hate me. Jessica Jones. Jessica. Freaking. Jones.

I gulped as I grabbed up my stuff and made my way to my new seat. I could feel Dave staring at me, his jaw no doubt on the floor.

Jessica sat down next to me and gave me the most beautiful smile I had ever seen.

She held her hand out to me, "I don't think we've formally met, I'm Jessica." Oh my god she smells like lavender. As Dave gives me eccentric thumbs up, I swallow the lump in my throat and shake her hand.

"I know. I mean, uh, yeah, I'm Roberta." Idiot. Idiot. Idiot. Idiot.

Jessica laughs, "I know." Oh. Oh. Oh, she thought it was funny.

Jessica stared at me for a while. God, she thinks I'm a freak.

"I love your nose ring." She commented, breaking the silence and pulling out her notebook.

"O-oh. Uh, thank you."

"I wish I could get one, but my parents would kill me. Besides, I'm not really sure if it'd fit my face. Yours looks really good on you, though. Definitely fits." I tried to hide my face as I felt the violent blush spread across my face. This is going to be a long few months and I'm simultaneously praying for and dreading the next seat change.
