~1977~
“Okay. Where's Lily?"
Sirius shrugged. "I don't know. Last I saw her she was running away from me." He fixed his eyes on James. "Why do you care, mate? It's not as if she's going to happy if you ask her out."
James sighed, exasperated.
Actually, we're already going out. We just haven't told you yet.
"I know that, Padfoot, but she wasn't at breakfast this morning, or dinner last night"
"Maybe she fell asleep in the library again." Peter piped up.
"Maybe...”
"She could be in the hospital wing." Sirius said nonchalantly.
James turned to him quickly. "Why would she be there?!"
He put his hands up in surrender. "I’m sorry I said anything."
Peter looked at the two. "Let’s go ask Moony, okay?"
"It was a full moon last night, Pete."
"I know that. I’m building on Padfoot's idea, if she was in the hospital wing, Remus would have seen her. So we go ask him.
James looked panicky, so Peter amended. "Not that Lily's going to be there in the first place. It’s just an idea."
Wormtail watched Prongs process the information. As he was forming a word, Sirius spoke up.
"I don't care, I want to see Remy. To the hospital wing!" he exclaimed arrogantly, while marching in that direction through the castle.
James chuckled at his mate's antics, grateful for the momentary distraction.
"Hey mate, about Lily. Nothing could have happened." Peter looked at him.
James smiled in response. "Thanks."
The three of them walked through Hogwarts, Peter and Sirius chattering to each other, leaving James in thought. Where was Lily? She surely would have informed him if she was sick somehow, possibly through Mary or Alice.
Sweet Merlin, I hope she's okay.
Sirius ran ahead and opened the door. "Hello Professor."
James and Peter looked at each other and then ran after him. "Hello," the two spoke in unison.
Dumbledore grinned at the three, his blue eyes twinkling. "Why don't you gentlemen join me? Poppy called me. I have a feeling that it has something to do with Mr. Lupin.
James frowned. “What do you mean?"
"Alas, I cannot answer, as I do not know myself."
The boys went white. "W-what?"
Madam Pomfrey came out from behind one of the curtains. "Albus, thank goodness you're here." She motioned with her arm for Dumbledore to follow. She said nothing more, she didn't even tut when she saw Sirius, Peter, or even James (what, Quidditch does that, alright? It wasn't his fault his fault he was the best on the Gryffindor team. He was captain after all) which alarmed them even more.
"W-what happened?" Sirius croaked.
Madam Pomfrey ignored him, and looked imploringly at Dumbledore.
They moved past the elders and came up to the werewolf's bed. When they saw him, they let out a breath that they didn't know they were holding.
It’s okay, he's alive.
However, they were stunned to see him with his head in his hands, his frame shaking.
"Moony? You okay?" Sirius asked quietly, while the other two were frozen. They haven’t seen him break down like this since second year when they found out his secret.
Remus didn't answer.
The awkwardness was apparent in the room. Remus was still weeping.
James, looking for something to break the silence, blurted out, "Hey, what're you doing with Lily's scarf?"
"Is that glass?"
"Why is there blood?!" Peter exclaimed, horrified.
Remus shook harder and let out a sob.
"You...Lily...what happened?" James was thoroughly confused, and wanted his mate to stop crying. It was scaring him.
"....Moony didn't get her right?" Peter mumbled. "I mean, we would have seen..."
Sirius spoke, his voice trembling. "But he ran off towards the end... remember?"
The marauders were terrified. What was going to happen? Did moony kill someone? Lily?
No, he didn't. Stop thinking that.
"Gods, Remus, how are you still sane?" James breathed.
Remus looked up; tears creating tracks down his cheeks, his eyes red and puffy. "H-how do you guys n-not h-hate me?" his voice broke twice.
"You’ve done nothing wrong, Mr. Lupin." Dumbledore spoke clearly.
He turned to the head master. "Yes-yes I d-did. I k-k-killed Li-Lily Evans." he put his head back in his hands.
The occupants of the room looked heartbroken as Moony broke into sobs again.
"Miss Evans is not dead," he ignored it when all eyes were on him; "on the contrary, she is very much alive. Miss Evans cut herself on the broken glass of her Time-Turner. So, you could say that she is, in fact, 'lost in time'. Do not fret, she will be returned to 1977. Don’t worry, Mr. Potter, I believe your girlfriend is unharmed."
Dumbledore smiled at James, before turning his attention to Remus. "Cheer up, Mr. Lupin, all of this can be fixed." he nodded at the four and walked out of the hospital wing.
Peter spoke first. "You hear that, mate? He can fix it. It wasn't your fault."
"It’s going to be fine, Moony. We’re mates, right?" James smiled encouragingly.
Remus chuckled and wiped his eyes. "Th-thanks guys." he frowned when he looked at Sirius. "Err, Padfoot? You alright?"
Sirius was gaping at James in disbelief, his arm outstretched and pointing accusingly at the said boy. "Evans is your girlfriend?!"
