OCTOBER 11TH
Yesterday was the day that Rayne and Autumn came home to an eviction notice taped to the door of the apartment. They had thirty days to pack all of their shit and move out.
Things were going well for them at first when they moved into this apartment in Seattle. They were both working pretty decent jobs, they had more than enough money to cover their rent and utilities. But how did that change? Rayne ended up getting fired and the bills were all up to Autumn until her sister could find a new job.
There wasn't any luck with the job search, though. Rayne would fill out application after application but either the workplace wasn't hiring, or she heard nothing from them after the interview. Autumn couldn't afford many of the bills anymore, even if she were to work two jobs, which led to that god forsaken eviction notice being taped on the door yesterday.
Today, Rayne and her sister were in a full blown panic. They were racing around the apartment stuffing everything into boxes. They now had twenty nine days left to pack everything up and somehow find a place to live. Rayne was now unemployed and Autumn couldn't afford to do much now, let alone eat.
Rayne and Autumn had been bickering since the day prior due to all of the tension in the air. Autumn was obviously stressed about finding a new place to live but was trying to keep her cool on the outside. Meanwhile, Rayne could not keep even the slightest ounce of cool. She, of course, would vent these frustrations and stresses to her sister which aggravated Autumn even more to the point where they began to argue on and off for the past twenty four hours.
"What are we gonna do? Where are we gonna go? I lost my job and I have no money and you have about enough money to buy us a cardboard box to get comfy in for when we move under a goddamn bridge!" Rayne would say.
"Just relax, Rayne. I'm handling it. It's not like we have to be out by tomorrow. We have a little less than thirty days. We'll handle it like we always do." Autumn would respond.
"But what if we don't? We can't afford shit for houses right now. These next few weeks will go by fast and we'll have nowhere to go!"
"Well maybe if you wouldn't have gotten yourself fired, YOU WOULD STILL HAVE A JOB! AND WE WOULDN'T BE IN THIS FUCKING SITUATION!"
"HEY, THAT WASN'T MY GODDAMN FAULT! I SWEAR TO GOD MY BOSS HAD IT OUT FOR ME AND HE WAS LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT EXCUSE TO LET ME GO!"
"So you call failing a routine fucking drug test your boss having it out for you? Could you be any more dumb?"
"What can I say, Autumn? It's too late to take it all back now. Now we just need to focus on finding a place to live. And we have nowhere to go!"
"I said I would handle it, Rayne, so just DROP it already!"
Rayne sighed and walked over to the other side of the living room to grab another empty box. Their living room was nearly empty, the walls now naked from them taking down all of their signs, pictures, and decorations. The only things that remained were a few sealed up boxes, their black leather couch, and their 60" flatscreen.
Rayne walked over to her sister, who was still kneeling on the floor getting ready to seal up yet another box. She dropped the empty one she was holding right next to Autumn. "Here." She said more calmly. "You might need this. I'm gonna start packing up my room."
"Alright. Thanks." Autumn muttered, still looking down at the box she was now taping up.
Rayne slowly stepped around the corner and down the hall to the door of her bedroom. She lifted a hand and twisted the doorknob, pushing the door open with the same hand. She stood in the doorway and watched the door open as it creaked loudly.
