Hey :) so in this story my characters are all inspired from the show The 100 but you don't have to watch the show to read my story (even though I hope you do because it's awesome) I changed many things and made it as if there was never a nuclear war. As if it was present time and has a different plot. I hope ya like my story :)
___________________________________________________________________________________________They don't lie when they say New York is the city that never sleeps. I've only been here for a couple of hours and I can already see why so many people love it here. You don't have to drive a car because everything is so close to each other, the food leaves your taste buds dancing for more, and when it's dark and all the lights are turned on the beautiful view is something people don't see often. My mother told me that New York is where dreams become reality for people that are looking for a new beginning but for us I didn't see that happening anytime soon. She thinks all you have to do is sit down and wait for your dreams to magically come true but that's kind of like hoping for your life to be exactly like your favorite fairytale. In other words: it won't ever happen so don't even think about.
I struggled to carry the last box into our new apartment. Walking up the stairs and taking it to my room is something I hope I won't ever have to do again. Most of the time I was the one that went to the moving truck that was outside to bring all of our belongings into the crappy apartment my mother decided to rent. My mother said she was too tired to do anything so she was laying on the couch as she watched me having a difficult time to hold heavy bags and boxes. When I finished I noticed that the place was a mess but I lost all of my energy so I didn't bother to clean it up.
Moving from a small town in Georgia to a large city is a major change and is something that is going to take me a long time to get used to. In matter of fact the only reason we moved was because of my father. Everything changed ever since he went to the army. Many people came up to me and told me that my father was a hero. What they didn't know was that I didn't want him to be a hero. I wanted him to be my father. I've accepted the fact that I haven't seen my father in a year and probably won't see him for a couple of more months. My mother on the other hand wasn't as strong as me. My mother became quieter after my dad was gone and as the days went on she continued to be upset. That's when she started to drink. She thought drinking was going to wash away all of her problems but all it did was make them worse. She lost her job because she came to work late because she was too drunk to get her ass up and she didn't grade her students exams on time. I'll never be able to be a teacher like my mom used to because I'd lose my mind if I was trapped in a building filled with teenagers.
I had a gut feeling that we were going to move sooner or later because my mother couldn't even pay the house bills but I never expected us to move to New York. Living in a city isn't cheap so when my mom told me I was quite surprised until I actually came here. The smell hit me as soon as I entered the room. It was sickening and I couldn't help but gag. The decaying scent choked the air and for a second I thought I was going to puke all over the place. I couldn't even bare the thought of waking up everyday to the sight of the ugly flower wallpaper, which was in almost every room. The kitchen appliances looked like they were from the early 1900s, each bedroom was the size of a closet, and walking on the old hardwood floors led to a loud creaking noise. No wonder we are able to afford this dump.
After spending an hour trying to make the apartment as clean as possible I finally gave up. I turned off the vacuum and rested my sore hands. My original plan was to take a nap once I was done cleaning but that all changed when my stomach started to growl. I waited a while for the sound to stop but all it did was become louder. Suddenly I was craving for food. It was as if I needed to eat something right now or I would just drop dead. First I checked the refrigerated but was quickly disappointed when I noticed it was almost empty. The only thing I found in there were leftovers from dinner yesterday and a jar of pickles. When I came to the conclusion that there wasn't any food for me here I decided to go to my mother. Instead of laying on the couch like she usually does she was normally sitting while reading a magazine about staying in shape.
