It was storming outside,  but even with the thunder I could still hear my mom yelling downstairs. I didn't know what they were fighting over nor did I care. Violet was at a sleepover so I didn't have to worry about her. The police wouldn't be called, as the staff had already left for the day and our property was mainly forest, with our closest neighbors being miles away.

It was almost midnight and I just wanted to sleep. That obviously wasn't in the cards though as I heard a loud crash and thud. It was too loud for me to ignore. I opened my door and jogged downstairs to the parlor where it sounded like they were.

First thing I saw was the broken glass and liquid all over the floor, the liquor cabinet was on the ground. I wondered how they'd explain that to the staff tomorrow.

Then I noticed that Charles, I mean "Dad" as he demanded to be called, had my mom up against the wall by her throat. She wasn't fighting him off, just glaring at him. By how she was acting I would've assumed he wasn't putting much strength behind strangling her, if not for the fact that her face was turning a little blue.

I ran over and shoved him as hard as I could. Now I work out everyday, and compared to the guys on my team I was the strongest. Unfortunately that meant nothing when I was up against Charles. My shove made him lose his balance, and his grip on my mom, which I could only attribute to me having had the element of surprise.

He landed on one knee and hand. His hand must've landed in some broken glass by the blood dripping from his fingers when he stood up.

He looked down at his hand then at me. My blood turned to ice when I met his eyes. His eyes showed his hatred for me and I tried not to imagine how he'd get me back later. I refused to show my fear though and maintained eye contact with him.

Both Charles and I were startled out of our stare down by my mom suddenly laughing hysterically. I worried that she'd finally lost it.

Then she spoke "Stop acting like a stingy little bitch and just pay the damn money".

Nope my mom definitely hadn't lost it, she was still her sweet self.

Charles said through gritted teeth "I wouldnt have to pay blackmail money if you weren't a careless slut Portia".

My mom just smiled icily stating "If you were man enough to satisfy me I wouldn't have to find someone else to, then we wouldn't be in this mess".

Then she spun around and left the room, but not before stopping in front of me to say "Must you always stick your nose where it doesn't belong?".

I heard the front door slam a few seconds later.

I was frozen in place with dread not knowing what I was about to face, but Charles just walked past me and upstairs. I let out a breath hoping his anger at my mom had him forgetting about my shove. Though as I laid down to sleep, at the back of my mind, I knew that wouldn't happen.
