I hung out with my friends for awhile after school, just trying to delay going home. I knew better though, delaying it only made it worse because it just prolonged my worrying and me imagining the worse.
Finally I said goodbye to my friends and went home. I pulled into my spot and went to the side door which went to the kitchen. I opened the door and wave of amazing aromas hit me full force. The kitchen staff was running around preparing dinner, while Marisol barked orders out.
Marisol is the head of staff for our household. She's worked for my family for as long as I could remember. She practically raised me.
Marisol noticed me and walked over. She smiled and hugged me saying "If you think I can get you out of dinner think again. Go wash up, dinner will be in ten minutes".
I went to leave, but stopped and asked her where my sister, Violet, was at. Usually I'd hear her causing trouble as soon as I got home. Marisol told me that my parents enrolled her in an afterschool program because she's failing math and science.
While washing my hands I thought about how surprising that was. Violet was only 8yo and in the second grade. Not to mention that she's doted on by Charles, but I guess failing any classes would be too big of a hit to our reputation. After I was done I walked to the dining room, making sure to take a deep breath at the doors before I entered.
Charles and my mom were seated at opposite ends of the table, as far away from each other as possible. The tension was so thick I felt like I'd suffocate, but I took my seat between them.
A few seconds later Marisol and other staff came in and started covering the table in different food items. Before they left I made sure to say "Thank you" to them.
Once they were gone my mother immediately turned to me and practically hissed " Do not EVER thank the staff for doing their damn jobs".
Charles started laughing staring "At least he didn't sleep with the staff like you".
My mom scoffed "Like you haven't slept with your fair share of staff"
Charles slammed his fist down, shaking the table, and yelled "BUT I WASN'T STUPID ENOUGH TO BE VIDEOTAPED!!"
Then there was total silence while they just stared at each other. Suddenly Charles smiled, that smile never brought with it anything good.
