I woke up with a call on my phone. It was irritating, my hangover wasn't done yet to show all its colours. A heavy head, I picked up the call annoyingly without even opening the shutter of both eyes.
I made an strange noise instead of asking hello or who and now I so damn regret but I was sleepy.
"Harris, I am coming in five minutes", he said and added,
"Be ready""Mrs Alford", I said and abruptly sat on my bed like he was sitting next to me, "Ya," I said and we hung the phone.
Isn't it too early, I thought to myself before I glanced on the watch. My eyeballs fell on the ground, dude it's even sunrise yet. I thought I overslept but I didn't. It's like two hours since Advin dropped me.
Since Mr Alford will be here in two minutes, I better get and done soon. I don't want to wait for him, though he wouldn't have anyone to complain anymore. Wonder what he wants to discuss. I just hope to god, it's not a boring lecture on #responsibilities, Hoff!
After I was dressed up the most adore I could, I sat and waited patiently for him in the living room. Where father would meet him every time. This room is a classic shit. Everything as elegant as pearl, the walls were oyster pale and the sofa and furniture were soft cushions of cream. The chandelier is costly enough to buy a bar. It basically contained everything a rich person could afford in a single room.
He said he'll be there in two minutes but it's more like half an hour or so. I wore a striped shirt with a circular neck, white pant and neatly combed hair. Yup, not spice or anything, just neatly combed nerd hairstyles which I would puke anytime if I saw myself in the mirror.
Cacy wasn't picking up her phone nor did Cavin, how annoying. I was bored with AF.
I waited... and waited and waited... until my eyes shit down.
Snap!
My eyes shot open with a snapping I heard near my face. It was Mr Alford who was sitting after waking me up, like this?
I smiled at him with wet eyes.
He didn't wear any particular expression, "Sorry, to keep you waiting", he apologized while placing a suitcase on the glass table. His sorry was lifeless.
I smiled again widely, trying to look a sugar pie, "No, it's fine" I said.
He unblocked his suitcase, "I thought you might be in your room, so I sent your guest there, but you are here" he said.
"Guest?" I asked, but maybe he didn't hear me or just didn't bother to answer me.
He took out a file after shutting the suitcase and begin to read it with keenly, like each and every word. He had this long face and curly hair, vague white beard and wrinkles, grey suit, white shirt and red stripped tie.
"Do you know", he sais and showed his file, "What is this?" he asked and I shook my head side to side in a disagreement.
"Long story short, you know your father is a billionaire and after his death, someone has to be the heir of his money," he said.
"And that's me", I said abruptly and he glared at me by his sharp glasses just for a second, "How childish" he whispered and smile roughly.
He looked at me, "Usually, you should be the heir of all the money your father ever earned but I think he had some other plans in mind"
I raised an eyebrow, "What Plans?" I asked him.
He flipped through the pages before his eyes stumbled upon a letter. He flips open it and read for me, "Dear Harris, you might get this letter when I am no more around you...
You have to learn to make decisions of life yourself when I am not around. You have to struggle in things which were easy before. I want you to become a man enough to handle your life without pain and without me. All the money I ever earned, God wouldn't let me take it with myself. It's all yours.
But I decided to be a little harsher here. I want you to become a man of balance where. you have a billion dollar shoe. I had never told you this before, I don't know. This is hard but I secretly adopted a child.
I was raising him all by myself but not long that I feel the crisis in my health. He doesn't have anyone except me, and if I am not for him, only you stay.
I decided to give you all of my money in one term if you take care of my adopted child and treat him like family. I would be glad then. Love Daddy"
My heart stopped as his lips did. What have I heard? There was silence, in the air and in between us.
Mr Alford flipped pages again, "You might have understood your father's letter, now the term he mentioned earlier for you to inherit all his money," he said.
My ears wouldn't listen to him, father had adopted a kid, why so and why to hide this from me? Initially, he got my custody from the beginning. If mother were to adopt a child, it would be understandable, but why him.
Mr Alford cleared his throat when he realised I was tantalising and submerged in thoughts Just then the fat maid entered to serve us tea.
She did her thing and we kept quite. I denied the tea, how could I sip tea at a time like this, not that I sip it anyway.
"So, the terms thing your father mentioned earlier, listen carefully", he said and I was all ears, "His wealth will be all yours but in four chunks or to say you'll receive all the money in four instalments"
"The money is divided into four pieces. Each instalment posses a challenge or kinda like a task for you to complete. If you fail to achieve those task alloted to you, the money will be donated to charities"
