"I really messed up this time, Adam." Penny's head was rested on her friend's shoulder as he flicked through Netflix, looking for something to watch with the Chinese food they had ordered.

Adam let out a world-weary sigh as he lifted one hand to pat her on the head like she was a puppy. She would have been annoyed if she weren't so comforted by it.

"He hasn't even been back to the coffee shop since." Penny continued. She didn't know what she do if he did return. Probably just apologise again and make him even more uncomfortable.

Just remembering the look that he'd given her made her stomach twist sharply.

Adam stopped flicking through the shows then, placing the remote he'd been holding on the arm of the sofa as he turned to face Penny, forcing her head from off of his shoulder.

Penny let out a soft disgruntled noise at her resting place being disturbed, but all sounds got locked in her throat from one serious look from Adam.

"Penny," he said in a deep solemn voice that made her insides squirm like she was being told off by her parents. "You have to stop." He told her.

Penny knew he was right, but that didn't make hearing it any less painful.

"I know." She hung her head in defeat. "I just... I want to apologise so much. You didn't see his face Adam. He looked so unsettled, like he would wake up one night and just find me standing over his bed like some psycho-"

"Pen," Adam said in a slightly softer voice this time.

A pained noise left her throat. "I'm the worst, aren't I?"

Adam shook his head, giving her a fond look that she really didn't deserve right then. "You're not the worst. You're...an acquired taste."

"Hey!" Penny shoved his shoulder with a small shove that lacked any real heart.

Adam let out a small laugh, letting her shove push him away. "I know it sucks Penny, but sometimes people fuck up and they don't get a chance to apologise."

Penny sighed. "You're right. It does suck."

Adam smiled and lifted his arm, offering her back her place to rest on his shoulder.

She didn't hesitate to take it.

"So what do you want to watch?" He asked, picking the remote back up from where he had left it.

"I don't know. A rom-com maybe?" She suggested.

"Are you sure that's the best idea?"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"I don't know...I just don't want you getting any ideas..."

She nudged him hard in his side, and he just laughed.

They did end up watching a romantic comedy in the end (despite all Adam's protests), and about twenty minutes in there was a knock on the door.

"That'll be food." Adam said sitting up and rolling his shoulder around to loosen his muscles.

"I'll get it." Penny told him. "My treat. For you being a good friend or whatever."

"Awww Pen." He put a hand over his chest.

"Shut up." She made sure to give him a light kick on her way to the door.

"Don't forget to give them a tip!"

"I know. I'm not a heathen." Penny called out just before she swung open the door.

And then she froze.
