Mineta

4:36pm

Looking up from his mobile phone, he saw Mr. Hegarty walk into the coffee shop. He swore that his heart stopped. Hegarty looked so much more handsome in real life then through my computer screen. His brown hair was slicked back neatly, his brilliant white smile illuminating his whole face. He wondered why he didn't show his face during his videos. He was gorgeous. His eyes searched the room and eventually fell upon him. Mineta suddenly felt shy. He glanced down at his black coffee, feeling his face get red, and get even redder as the maths tutor started making his way towards him.

"Hi," Mineta said, but it only came out as a squeak.

"Hello," Mr. Hegarty replied. His voice was sweet and smooth, sounding nothing like what he sounded like in the videos and exactly like it at the same time, "You said you needed help with revision for your maths test."

"Oh, urr, um, yes, yes I do," he stuttered. He was so confident during their video chats - why was he so shy now? Something fluttered inside. That strange feeling came back again from when he first heard Colin's voice, he missed it and hated it. A strange addiction of some sort.

"It's nice to finally meet you, Mineta, what should I order? Maybe a pumpkin spice frappuccino." Mr. Hegarty said while he scanned the menu on the pink pastel brick wall, across the room. Strands of his slicked-back hair waved in the soft breeze from the window behind Colin. He waved to the waitress and ordered a drink and a blueberry muffin with exactly 16 blueberries. The flustered waitress also seemed taken aback by Collins' beauty.

"So can I see the assignment for your homework, if I may... okay well it's good that I am here to help you"Coughed with slight embarssiment.

"Yeah, I guess... I don't really get it. Sorry, I got a coffee stain on it," Mineta mumbled as he handed the assignment over, shaking. While Colin looked over the paper he held his mug of coffee to stop the shaking and glanced over the cafe. He needed a way to calm his flustered self. The drink arrived with the muffin soon after. It surprised Mineta that Mr. Hegarty took an Instagram of his order.

"Okay let's get started, sorry, I am a bit obsessed with cute things" Colin chirped happily as he sipped his frappuccino. They talked and worked on the assignment for an hour or more. The feeling stayed but Mineta started to get used to it, they felt comfortable around each other. He occasionally looked up to see his face, soft and kind. His eyes focused on Mineta and only him. Colin reached over the table to write an equation. Their hands touched. So tender, so soft. Mineta's face went bright red as Mr. Hegarty smiled at him warmly. The moment only lasted a couple of seconds, but it was perfect. Everything was. The pink plastic cherry blossoms in the vase, the cozy sunshine behind Colin that cast an illuminating ray of light around his face, like an angel from above.

Seconds, to minutes to hours, flew by as they both sat at their little coffee table discussing childhood memories, dreams, and a million other things. They were completely at peace with each other. Mineta felt a question bubbling inside, was there another.

"I was just wondering, you don't have to answer if you don't feel comfortable asking," Mineta immediately regretted asking this question, what if Colin didn't answer. Would he hate him? Anxiety started to fuzz his brain with a million outcomes." Are you with someone at the moment?"

"Yes..well not anymore. You see around early last year ago I broke up with someone. I felt this was it we were perfect together. We were so close, but I guess not," Coilin stared at his newly filled mug of pumpkin spice latte." She was kind, smart and made my life a ray of sunshine. Always there when I was working late at night, and being a shoulder to cry on when things went downhill for the business at one point.

"Her name was Eleanor Brookfield. We met in an advanced mathematics seminar, back then I was shy and scared of girls. But she gave me confidence. She was everything then after all our hardships she becoame someone else not the person i feell in love with. And the rest is history... I guess"

He sniffed and cleared his thoughts. His big eyes were glassy reflecting the street lights outside the window. He smiled at Mineta and said he was fine and not to worry. Mineta saw as Colin opened his wallet to pay for their drinks a small picture of him and a tall woman. He asked to see it. She wore large glasses and had tan olive skin, mid-length curly hair which is a cute ponytail. They were both riding a two-seater red bike through the autumn leaves, smiling and laughing. This must have been before she started to find other hobbies. But she seemed to be a genuinely nice person with a big heart. How could she change so much to be toxic?

They were shortly afterward ushered out the shop by a waiter since it was closing time. As they walked in the setting sun's rays, the aesthetic pink light shining gently, Mineta, as he was looking on his phone from the Instagram feed, found Colin's hand and held it. He didn't mean to but it was automatic. Mr. Hegarty squeezed his hand back and smiled as the rain pattered gently on the pavements. Cooking bread filled the air from a nearby bakery. Life was calm for that moment.
