Emmas POV.
I was sitting in the car of my social worker, waiting to get dropped off at yet ANOTHER foster home. I was told they they are also fostering another child as well. I didn't know who though.
We pull up to a house and we both get out of the car. Walking up to the door of a small house in need of repainting, and maybe new windows. My social worker, Mrs. Snider, knocks on the door and a couple second later a man probably 44 years old opens the door wearing overalls.
" Who are you and why are you here?" He asks with a stern tone.
" I'm Mrs. Snider, and this is Emma Swan. The child you agreed to foster." Mrs. Snider says. The man looks me up and down and out of nowhere a woman appears behind him, a skinny woman wearing a purple dress. It looks more like a nightgown to me but I decided to keep my mouth shut.
" Who?" The woman asks, looking at the man.
" That woman says this is Emma Swan. The girl we agreed to foster." The man says turning to the woman." Alright, come on then." The woman says. Before going in I turn to my social worker almost begging her with my eyes to not let me go. But she does anyways. I walk inside the house and look around the house with my eyes, not touching a thing.
" Alright listen." The man says coldly, getting my attention. " We might be fostering you but we aren't your partners. You will do what we tell you. Refuse, and you'll get punished. Don't mess with anything that isn't yours. And don't wast my time." He says not even bothering to tell me where my room is.
" Excuse me sir?" I ask making him turn to me with a sigh.
" Where's my room?" I ask politely.
" You share with Hannah." He says.
" Who's Hannah?" I ask the woman since the man has already walked away.
" The other child were fostering. She's two years old, that's why we're fostering you. So you can care for her." The woman says it like I should already know that. She points to the stairs and says the room is the last one on the right.
I follow her instructions and walk into the room. There are two windows, a bed by one and a crib by the other. The walls are bare and there's two sets of drawers. One for me and one for Hannah. I walk to my bed and put my single bag down, I then quietly walk over to the crib and look in. There, laying with a tiny blue blanket is a small girl with blond locks like mine, only hers are a little more care free.
She sleeps soundly, clutching the blanket close to herself, she's curled in a ball and that's when I see her tiny body shake a little.
" Poor thing." I whisper to myself before slowly pulling a blanket off my bed and lay it over Hannah. It was November after all so it was getting pretty chilly. I then proceeded to unpack my cloths, putting the few clothing items I had into the plastic drawers. I saved one drawer to put my brush, toothbrush, money and a few other personal items into as well as my bag.
I sat on my bed and pulled out a book. After maybe 20 minutes I heard fussing and assumed it was Hannah. I stood up and walked to the crib. She was now wide awake and struggling to stand up. She looked up at me and froze.
" Hi." I said slowly and calmly as to not scare her. Her blue eyes locked with my green ones.
" H-h-hi." She says slowly. Stumbling over the word. Clearly, no one has taught her to speak properly.
" Want me to pick you up?" I ask her. Being in group homes, I learned to care for little kids. So I knew Hannah wouldn't be a problem. She nods and I picked her up and carried her to my bed. I set her down and sat beside her and returned my attention to my book when Hannah tugged at my shirt. I looked at her wondering what she wanted.
" C-can I sit I-in your lap?" She asks speaking slowly and cautiously. Like she would get rejected. No doubt she has before. Heck I've been rejected food before!
" Yeah." I say and she smiles climbing into my lap. She sits so that her legs are over my right leg and her head is close to my heartbeat. Not long after she asked me to read to her. I red my book to her and she ended up falling sleep right in my arms. Maybe this home won't be so bad after all. Maybe, hopefully, I'll get to stay here. I think to myself as I put Hannah down back in her crib.
A few hours later I woke Hannah up and we had dinner. After that we both had baths and I helped her into her night cloths. After that I basically rocked her to sleep and she was growing on me quickly. I didn't want to leave her behind if I had to run but, will I have to?
That question stuck with me the rest of the time I was awake with was only about an hour before the man called, lights out. I did as I was told and went to bed. Maybe it won't be so bad after all at the house. But what about school?
Guess we'll find out soon.
