DAKOTA

I leaned against the counter acrossed from the room Kyashi was changing in. I checked my watch. It was a quarter past tweleve. I sighed fixing my hat. The door squeaked open. Kyashi sheepishly walked out. She wore a baggy blue t-shirt and jeans that fit her perfectly.

"Bout time you got out of there. You ready to go?"

She nodded. Her face blazed red as she stared down at her shoes. We headed down the hallway. Barely speaking a word. She had something on her mind but I could tell she wasn't going to tell me. I felt bad for her. I know how hard it is at first. I just hope I can tell her over lunch what's going on.

"Do you wanna go to McDonald's or uh..anywhere outside of this hospital? "
Geez. I'm not being a convincing officer.

"Shouldn't I check out first?"

She looked confused.

"Oh! Yeah probably. ." I stuttered.
Wow. Way to go idiot.

I walked with her to the counter. One the guys I knew worked here. He waved me over. I led Kyashi over to him and he told her she was set to go. I smiled at her. She continued to stare at the floor.

"You..you never told me your name officer.."

I stopped walking. I turned to face her.
Crap!

"I didn't? Uh...well. My name is Dakota."
Geez. None of the others ever asked my name.

She smiled at me. It was forced, I could tell. We casually walked out of the hospital and onto the sidewalk. I took her to the police car that was parked were I had imagined it to be. I opened the door for her and watched her climb in. I turned it on. The engine purred as I put it in drive and started out the parking lot.

"So where do you want to eat?"

She looked out the windows and muttered softly, "McDonald's maybe...if it's close."

I nodded. I turned to my GPS and searched all nearby McDonald's. The closest one was five minutes down the road.
