Name meaning:
It literally means "Realm of the solar ellipse". "Sonelise" is based on the transliteration of the German word "Sonnenellipse".
Kingdom of Sonelise is strongly influenced by the ideals of Enlightenment that took place during the 18th century, so the element of light needed to be emphasized.
The Sun is the light source par excellence, thus it best represents light.
The explanation for the choice of the word "ellipse" can be found in the Scientific revolution that took place during the 17th century and that laid the groundwork for Enlightenment to develop. Johannes Kepler, a German astronomer who has influenced science of Europe in the Enlightened Period, is famous for his laws of planetary motion - one of which saying exactly that "all planets move in ellipses, with the sun at one focus".
Flag meaning:
Purple is meant to symbolize the wealth of the country and its power - also purple pigment was extremely hard to obtain during that time, thus its display was a sign of dignity and luxury.
White is meant to symbolize light.
Blue is meant to symbolize the country's connection to the sea, for Sonelisian economy strongly depends on maritime trade. Sonelise is a country with outlet to the sea, it also has one of the biggest harbors of the continent along with a flourishing market.
The griffin is the embodiment of earthly power and majesty, it's also a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine, and it was considered the lord of all creatures. It combines the power of a lion - largely used to symbolize the Sun - and the swiftness of an eagle, which also represents the sky.
