I watched as Tintin drove the two of us, speedily past many buildings as we made our way to our destination. I interlocked my fingers, trying to get them to stop shaking.
I turned my head towards Tintin when I heard him say, "Are you sure you want to do this? It's not to late to change your mind."
I shook my head. "No, I can't change my mind. It took me thirteen years to get the courage to do this, Tintin. I can't turn back now."
Tintin kept his eyes on the road and one hand on the wheel but he used his other one to reach over and cover my hands with his. "I'm proud of you, Lillian."
"Thanks, Tintin."
"What will you say to them?"
"I don't know." I answered. "We'll see what happens."
Tintin released my hands and placed his back on the wheel. I looked outside and hoped that everything would go well, and that coming here wasn't a mistake.
A couple minuets later, we arrived. Tintin parked in a driveway that was positioned in front of a big white house. The people who lived here, were obviously wealthy.
Tintin turned off the car, turned to me, and asked, "Do you want me to come with you?"
I thought for a moment before replying, "Why don't you stay here for now. I'll wave to you if I need extra support."
"Okay. I'm here for you." He told me.
"I know." We both leaned in to give each other a quick peck before I got out and headed to the front door.
I stopped when the door was only a few feet in front of me. I lifted my hand and was about to ring the doorbell; but I hesitated. My hand hovered in that position for a few seconds until I let my arm fall to my side. I looked behind me and made eye contact with Tintin. I saw a small smile appear on his face and he nodded his head. This gave me more courage and when I turned back around to face the door, I rang the bell without hesitation.
It took a couple seconds, but an elder woman opened the door. She was wearing a maid's outfit and had a cloth in her hand.
"Can I help you?" She asked.
"I hope so. Is this the Quinlan residence? I'm looking for Charles and Alice."
"Who's asking for them?"
"My name is Lillian Haddock and I'm..."
Her expression instantly changed, and she quickly asked, "Lillian? It's really you?"
"Yes, ma'am. Do I know you?"
"You wouldn't remember me, but I helped your mother take care of you before..."
She couldn't finish her sentence because another voice came from inside the house. "Clara!!! Who's at the door?"
From where I was at, I could see an old woman in a beautiful white dress walking down a big staircase. The woman had silver hair that was pulled up into a neat bun. She had long silver earrings and was wearing a whole lot of makeup. I guessed that she was my grandmother.
Once she got to the bottom of the staircase, she finally noticed me, but didn't seem to recognize me. She stood next to the woman who she addressed as Clara and stared at me. Nether her expression nor voice were very friendly.
"What do you want?" She asked coldly with a scowl on her face.
To be honest, she intimidated me. Before I answered her question, I took a deep breath to calm myself down. "My name is Lillian Haddock. I'm your granddaughter."
