Move In Day

Ever since you received your acceptance letter to the college of your dreams---Thrombey University in Massachusetts---you spent every waking moment thinking about stepping onto campus for the first time.

To say you were excited was an understatement. So, when it was time to move into the dorms, you felt as if it was the best day of your life.

You adjusted the heavy cardboard box in your hands, "Come on, Chris! I want to set up my room as soon as possible so we can explore the campus together." You smiled at your hometown best friend, Chris Evans. He happened to be a year older than you, meaning this was his second year of college.

You and Chris were inseparable all throughout kindergarten to high school. You two met through both of your guys' moms, who also happened to be best friends. Since the first day you guys met, you too could not go a day without each other. When he left for college, you were heartbroken.

He was one of the few people you were able to click with at school. People found it weird that you were friends with someone older than you, which it wasn't, but students could be very judgmental.

You didn't let the teasing get between your friendship with Chris. He wouldn't let the people in your class talk to you in a rude manner either. One time during your junior year and his senior year, he caught two girls chatting about how Chris could do so much better than being friends with a "loser."

"Chris?" You asked, "Are you okay?" You noticed he was glancing over at two of your classmates talking about something from the other end of the lunch table.

"Y/N, we're best friends, right?" Chris asked hesitantly.

You laughed, "Of course. Why would you ask that?"

"I don't know, I feel like I don't deserve a friendship like ours. I'm such a loser." He sighed.

"Chris, if anything, I don't deserve you. You're so much more popular than me." You shook your head and gave him a little smile.

He turned to you, forcing you to look him in the eyes, "Y/N. Our friendship means everything to me. I just hope that you don't think that I devalue it in anyway. No matter what people say. You're so freaking awesome and I wish people would notice that."

You smiled gently, "Thank you, Chris. That means a lot."

"I just hope you won't let anyone pick on you or say mean things to you when I leave for college. I won't be able to protect you anymore if I'm a couple of hours away."

"Let's not think too far ahead. We still have a couple of months before you leave from Thrombey. Hey! I still can't believe you got a full ride scholarship for lacrosse there." You nudged his shoulder to cheer him up. You knew how other people's words got to him easily, even when they concerned you.

"Thanks, Y/N." He smiled back, a smile that still caused your heart to flutter no matter what...but you couldn't let him know that. "Some people may think you're a loser, but you're my loser."

You rolled your eyes, "Whatever."

You guys would FaceTime and text every night since Chris left for college. You loved hearing his frat house stories and what college life was like. You couldn't wait to join him, continuing your close friendship at the same university.

"I know, Y/N!" Chris was dragging along a cart full of other boxes with a backpack stuffed with clothes hanging off of his left shoulder.

"Y/N, sweetie, you sure you don't want to just go back for everything in rounds?" Your mother heaved as she struggled to keep the boxes balanced in her arms.

You paused in your tracks and turned back to her, "We have enough people to carry all my stuff in one round. We're fine!"

You smiled at your mom and Chris helping you move into your dorm. You couldn't wait to settle down for your first night of college. You weren't sure how your mom would feel though. You two shared a close bond ever since your parents divorced. It's been hard for her, so you tried your best to fill the void in her heart.

"Hey, Y/N. Do you want to set your box in here?" Chris gestured to the wagon he was pulling.

You shook your head, "It's alright. I gotta build some stamina for when I run across campus to get to my classes on time."

He laughed hysterically, clutching his chest. "Y/N, it's not always this hectic." He gestured to everyone carrying containers and luggages. "It's just moving day. It won't be like this all the time."

"Look who's talking, lacrosse boy." You stuck your tongue out at him and continued walking towards your new home.

He rolled his eyes and sighed, still giving you a toothy smile through his growing beard. "You're annoying."

"And you're my best friend," you laughed.

He sighed and rolled his eyes playfully, "Unfortunately."

"Is that everything?" Your mother asked, huffing as she unpacked the last box in your dorm room.

You smiled and nodded, "I think so. Shall we?" You looked over at Chris, throwing your bag over your shoulder.

"We shall." Chris offered his arm to you, which prompted you to link your arm through his.

"Hey, sweetie, before I go, when's your roommate coming here?" Your mom asked after giving you an intense hug and gesturing to the empty side of the room.

You shrugged, "I think she was planning on doing it later this evening because she flew in this morning."

"Where's she from?" Chris asked.

"San Francisco," you smiled, "How cool is that? I've always wanted to go there."

"Ooh," your mom sighed dreamily. "Okay, okay. I'll go now. Have fun you two! Chris, please take care of her."

Chris nodded, "As always, ma'am."

Your mom laughed heartily, "Still going to call me ma'am?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"Okay, Mom. I love you! Have a safe trip back. Make sure to FaceTime when you get home." You kissed your mom's cheek and hugged her tightly one last time.

"I'll miss you, sweetie. I know you're only a couple hours away, but it feels like I'm never going to see you again." She pouted.

You groaned, "Mom!"

She giggled, "Okay. Okay. I'll be okay. I'll see you for Thanksgiving break."

After you and Chris walked your mom back to her car, you two decided to look for your classrooms.

"You ready?" Chris wrapped an arm around your shoulders and  gave you a tight squeeze as you stepped into one of your class's building.

You smiled, your heart beating a million miles per hour. "More than ever!" With that, you strutted down the hall in search of your history classroom.
