Chapter 1
Stepping off the plane, I felt nervous. This was my first time away from home, or what used to be. Even more nerve wracking, I was across the ocean; in London, England. Though I have to admit, packing up and leaving behind my life in Missouri was hard; but it was worth it. I still couldn't believe I was doing this.
I've always wanted to write; no doubt about it. But to go to Oxford University with a full scholarship? No, I had never let my dreaming go too far. But this wasn't a dream. This was reality; and I still had a rough time trying to grasp it.
"Riley?" I knew that voice anywhere; the only one I enjoyed listening to.
My cousin, Jeremy. Really, we are only cousins by adoption. My aunt adopted him when Jeremy was 10, I was only 8. He may be adopted, but he'll always be my overall favorite in the family. Ever since his adoption, we've been close. No one could ever separate us. We were each other's best friends. It has been so long since I had last seen him. Two years ago, Jeremy got his getaway from the states. With almost the same dream as me, Jeremy is in the midst of becoming an editor. Which in time, means he'll be the editor of every piece I write.
Turning to face him, I couldn't suppress the smile etching on my face. He had not changed one bit. With the height of 5'10, muscled body, and styled hair the shade of a dark brunette; he managed to stay the same.
"Hey," I greeted with a smile.
I didn't have much time to process what was happening when two arms suddenly picked me off of the ground. He spun me around while having a good, natured laugh. It was one of those laughs that were contagious; once you heard it, you couldn't stop your own laughter from spilling out.
Once he put me down, I couldn't help but laugh a little at his excited mood.
"Jeremy, I missed you too!" He just smiled at me while taking hold of my bags.

The trip to Jeremy's flat was filled with tons of laughter. There was so much to catch up on that we didn't fully recognize we had already pulled up in front of the building. From the outside, everything was wonderful. The people were kind and sweet, and the atmosphere screamed "London". I loved every single part of it- until we entered the inside of his flat. I had never seen any living area such a mess. I am actually convinced that he threw a party here or something! Pizza boxes and beer cans were scattered just about everywhere; and there was a horrid stench of alcohol that only seemed to get worse with every step you took. I imagine I must have had a look of disgust, because Jeremy finally spoke up.
"Yeah, sorry about the mess, Ri. I had a couple friends over last night..."
I responded with my eyebrows raised and a sigh. There wasn't much I could do but accept it. To save even more money, Jeremy proposed I stay with him instead of paying for the dorm room. While the mess was not at all in my favor, I guess I'd have to do my part in cleaning.
"Oh, it's fine! Nothing a little cleaning can't fix!" He smiled; pleased I was okay with his mess. He looked past me but then brought his gaze back to me.
"So Ri, what's happened over there in the states in the past two years?"
My heart clenched; my hands grew shaky. Was it time to tell him the truth?
