"Hey I'm headed out for the night, see you guys next week" I muttered to Janae, the new Cashier on my way out from another day of honest work. Or semi honest, most employee's here slacked off in every area where possible, to get through their shift unfazed as possible. The quicker they could get out, the quicker they could get to living the life they desired.

"Be careful out there, I heard it's gonna rain again. With hail this time" Janae uttered back, not looking in my direction once.

Walking home in the rain was never a treat, and in this town it felt dangerous at all times, it increased the risk of somebody trying to harm you to take your lunch money for the next week. There was nothing to be done about doing what you have to do in this mundane town.

Going to work, going home and maybe stopping at Mrs.Lavell's bakery on the way, was about all that I have done for the past 2 years. Everyday being the same routine, never changing, trapping me in my own life with nothing and nobody to breathe new breath into it. Not that it was anyones job to save me from my own lack of decision.

Stepping out into the brisk November air and clutching my jacket closer to my chest with one hand and my onyx stone in the other, as if it would help the fact that I stubbornly have taken so long to invest in a jacket that would last me a few winters. I get on my way to go home, making a mental note to stop at the bakery on my way so I could get a few fresh almond croissants with Mrs. Lavells secret cream drizzle.

She made the best treats, and they were beyond comforting, especially during the times I needed it most, eating her treats and having a conversation for an hour or two gave me time to forget just how low of a point I was in life. She felt like the greatest light in my life, next to my cousin and her cat that adopted me.

Rounding the corner my excitement grew , seeing the familiar glow in the dark night, I could feel every cell in my nervous system bursting at my excitement for the sugary desserts. The feeling lasting until I looked through the glass, straight to where they were supposed to be, only to find the heavenly space empty. Walking for a while in the -2 degree weather and craving some warmth I entered the space anyway, desperate for relief. I would have to get a coat no later than Christmas.

"Mademoiselle, To whom do I owe this pleasure" Immediately I put a smile on my face at the sound of my favourite Baking queen.

"Why hello, Mrs.Lavell, may I ask where the Almond Croissants went?" Both of our eyes flickered to the empty space I had been staring down moments prior.

"Why someone must've bought them" I internally guffawed, of course someone bought them, but why? No one ever did, in fact, they were only on the menu because of me "Yeah, Some Goddess like woman bought them no more than an hour ago, I could have sworn I saw clouds part and smoke blow through here as she walked in"  That was odd. My neck tingled at her words but I chocked it up to the breeze from one of the workers leaving.

"All what, 7 of them?" I inquired, that wasn't too much for me but any other sane being it should have been. "Yup, all 7"

"Do you happen to have anymore in the back? you could fire up the oven and make one reaaally quick. For an old friend?" I tried my best, but I knew the answer already "Oven is off for the night and won't be back on until I bring my pretty face back in here tomorrow morning, you know that" Mrs.Lavell laughed her hearty laugh.

Mrs.Lavell wasn't old, not one bit, 38 Years young in fact. Her skin was like bronze mixed with gold, smooth as porcelain and I envied her. She was full of compassion and life, hell she had a life. That was what I envied, she had to close the shop at 9 for that very reason, she couldn't keep it open for me and my woes despite my wishes that someone drop what they need to do to comfort me in all my uncertainty.

"Hey, I heard it's gonna-"

"It's gonna rain, yeah, so did I" She smiled her warm smile at me but, I could tell she didn't fancy being interrupted. I pulled my sweetest puppy eye.

"You better hurry up and get home before it's too late. I'll make you some extra delicious Almond Croissants and you can pick them up in the morning, deal?"

"Deal"

Whoever that Holy Goddess is may have won tonight, but I win forever. That was better, right?

Stepping into my apartment I could feel something off, despite my usual paranoia, it felt really off. it felt...warm? it felt like a home, even. Which it never felt like. putting my keys on the front table, I usher off my coat, basking in the warmth for a minute.

The start of the supposed hail storm made me jump as if it were a scare from a movie, when suddenly I hear a purr, the purr of a cat. Specifically my Cousin Lalaine's cat, but it couldn't, could it?

"Olivia Fair, for a model of what every brown beauty should look like, you currently look like a worn penny"

My eyes nearly fell out of their sockets at the sight of my cousin Lalaine, I hadn't seen her in 2 and a half years but here she stood, with my almond croissants in her neatly manicured fingers. Not that those mattered in the moment. Running towards her, I felt myself unravel into bliss reaching her stretched arms.

"Before we go any further, please tell me how you got in?" My lock was supposed to be top of the line, which now that I thought of it, would be an up-sell from the clerk at Home Depot.

"I picked the lock, duh" Of course she did, she was good at getting where she needed to go, so much so, I wished I had her talents.  "So, what made you think to pick my lock instead of calling me or picking up the key, you know where I work"

"Because I didn't want to tell you to pack your shit around your coworkers, or wait sitting in front of your door like a stray" Now she had my interest peaked, pack?

"Pack for what? Where am I going?" I asked incredulously

At those words she grinned, even when we were young and she would steal me away for adventures, she never told me what we were doing.  She always shot me a devious look though and replied with a simple

"We're going up and away"
