I take out the piece of paper from my pocket and look at the address again. This used to be my favorite part of the job. Delivery.
But now I just wanna get back to the bakery as soon as I can. Maybe it's because I have to help Lydia out with customers. She has Steph for that, my subconscious annoyingly reminds me. Well Steph could be busy, I stupidly answer myself and rush to the written destination.
It's almost lunch time by the time I get back. Steph usually packs her lunch so we wouldn't have to close the bakery, and I get thirty minutes of break to go home and eat.
Lydia looks up at me from where she was on her knees cleaning melted butter off the floor.
I chuckle at her clumsiness as I walk to the counter to put the money in. "Did you spill it again?"
"I was trying to make that ginger bread cupcake you showed me yesterday," she tells me with a guilty look.
I glance at Steph and catch her rolling her eyes in annoyance.
I really, really want them to get along. Because I know once you get on Steph's good side, it will stay that way.
"Well, I'll go get lunch," I say with a yawn before turning to leave.
"Wait!" Lydia calls out and I look back at her. "Um, can I come with you just for today?"
She's been bringing her lunch for the past three days, and I noticed her lunch box placed under the table earlier, so I frown at her in curiosity.
"I, uh...I forgot to bring my lunch today, and my house is really far."
I glance at Steph, and from the look on her face I can tell she can see through her lie.
"Sure, you can come with me." I walk out followed by Lydia, wondering what the hell happened while I wasn't there.
"Are we going to your house?" she asks me sounding excited, and I immediately rethink my decision.
I can't take her home, or mom and Chloe will think she's my girlfriend. Even if I try to tell them, they'll embarrass me before I can get a word out.
"Uh, no, we'll uh-eat over there." I point to a random fast-food restaurant across the street. "We'll be able to get back soon since it's near."
She doesn't seem happy about that, and my curiosity gets the best of me. I have to know what happened between them. But before I can get a word out, she beats me to it.
"Do you always eat there?"
I rack my brain for the right answer but I can't come up with anything. If I tell her the truth she'll wonder why I don't want to take her home, and I will be having a painfully embarrassing time explaining it to her.
"Kind of. I mean, I go home sometimes but it's a bit far from here so it'll take me a lot of time-I mean, I do have the bike but-you know."
Stop rambling for the love of God.
