I hated it. I absolutely, positively, extremely hated it. It was huge, and over a hundred years old. It looked as if a tiny gust of wind could blow it all to the ground. Bottom line, it was one of the ugliest things I'd ever seen.
"Dad", I whined, "Why did we have to move here?"
"Because I got a huge promotion I couldn't turn down. And besides, a change of scenery is nice don't you think", he laughed making me scowl.
"No obviously not. This is the third time we've moved this year. I have no friends, I don't even know the name of this town, and this house is a piece of shit", I fired back.
"Watch your mouth young lady", he said, his expression turning sour, "I don't want to hear your complaints. This is a perfectly nice home, and with a little fixing, it'll be just like new".
I inwardly groaned while thinking my dad was such an idiot. "Yeah like that will ever happen", I muttered.
We finally reached the house, and pulled up to the front of the circular driveway. I hopped out of the moving van and started checking it out. There was a gazebo in the front, with a large lawn.
It was over 20 acres, which wasn't bad. But it was overgrown with weeds, and all kinds of brambles. It really needed some TLC.
I guess it was pretty in a way, sort of rustic with the old gazebo in the front. I could see myself spending a lot of time in there when it was nice outside. Maybe we could fix that up.
The house was a completely different story.
It was lopsided, puke-yellow and peeling in all places, and just plain ugly. I walked up the stairs to the front porch, running my hand along rail as I went. I stepped up to face the door and inhaled deeply, letting out a sigh before opening the it. As I crossed over the threshold I wondered if it would just collapse on me right then.
"Why don't you go upstairs and pick out a room sweetie", my mom chirped, coming in behind me.
"Okay", I said walking off to explore.
It was three stories tall. The bottom floor held the living room, kitchen, a bathroom, and a drawing room. The second floor had three bedrooms, and all had bathrooms in them which actually was pretty nice. On the third floor was the attic.
The first one was a bit too small for my liking. It screamed office space. The second had way too much space. 'Most likely the parents room' I thought.
But the last one was okay enough for me, so I ran back outside to grab my suitcase, and started unpacking.
A few hours later after I had finished dragging most of my furniture into my new room, and arranged it somewhat in a way I liked, I heard a strange noise. I stopped moving and listened. However it had stopped as well, leaving me to wonder if I had actually heard anything at all. 'What the hell', I wondered, 'I must be going crazy'.
I couldnt help myself though. I was too curious of a person. I walked to the doorway and looked out both ways, before cautiously proceeding to the staircase at the end of the hall. I took another deep breath. 'I seem to be doing that a lot today'. I smirked at my own comment. I really must be going crazy.
As I walked slowly up the steps alert, and a little scared, I felt a sudden wave of terror wash through my body. It subsided instantly. 'That was weird', I thought to myself.
I reached the top of the stairs, and strained to see what could possibly be through the doorway. Finding my courage, I ran up the last few steps and stepped inside the room. Bracing myself, I opened up my eyes to face whatever was there.
Nothing. The large attic room was completely empty aside from a large trunk, and some shelves with junk that had accumulated a large amount of dust over the years. 'That's odd'. I walked over the trunk inspecting the shelves as I went.
It had a padlock, but it was rusted badly. I rattled it a few times, but nothing happened. I stood up sighing in frustration and kicked it for no reason other than it was pissing me off.
To my complete, and utter surprise the lock popped open. I opened it and screamed at what was inside.
