Page 1 -- Introduction

Love is a vampire’s greatest weakness. Or so they said.

I have fallen in love before. Twice. With two girls who looked exactly alike, coming from the same bloodline.

My first love was Tatia, the originator of the Petrova doppelganger bloodline. It happened a thousand years ago, back when I was still human. She was a resplendent lady. Every man my age desired to be her suitor, including me, even though she had a child by another man.

I loved her with all of my heart. But what I didn’t expect was that I had to compete with my own brother, Niklaus, for her love. Niklaus and I both shared affection for Tatia. Niklaus was stubborn and for the first time, so was I. Tatia wouldn’t make any decision between the two of us and so we opposed against each other, competing for her love. Things got very bad between us and swords were even drawn.

Our mother was a very powerful witch. She didn’t like what was happening between me and Niklaus. She sought to end our feuding. After a time, I and Niklaus realized that it was Tatia’s blood that we had consumed on the night of the ritual that turned us into vampires. It was then I learned how important family was.

My second love wasn’t exactly a good one either. In fact, it was a mistake.

Her name was Katerina Petrova. Although now she is more familiar as Katherine Pierce. She was Tatia’s doppelganger. She had the exact look of Tatia. That was why when I first met her, I was reminded of my tragic first love. Her appearance had made it easy for me to fall for her, despite my effort to hold my feelings back.

In spite of her physical appearance, she was nothing like Tatia. She was brave, strong, free and fearless—like a bird out of its cage, whilst Tatia was sweet, gentle, caring and harmless—like an angel.

It was during the time that I and Niklaus were so close together that I met her. A vampire named Trevor introduced her to me on Niklaus’s birthday. In fact, Niklaus was the one requested to meet her. He needed her for the ritual, for his ritual. When they were introduced to each other, I noticed how she seemed to be attracted to him. If only she knew what he had wanted to do to her...

One day, I and Katerina were spending time together.

“Thank you for entertaining me,” she said when we finished playing a game of catch.

“You seemed lonely inside, so I took pity on you,” I replied, chuckling.

“Klaus promised to spend the day with me, but he never returned home from the night,” she sighed.

“Yes,” I responded. I knew Niklaus’s habits. “Klaus does not live by any rules but his own.”

“He is a very charming man. Hard for anyone to resist, I suppose,” she averred. But I knew that her sentence didn’t stop there.

“And yet?”

“I know not why he courts me,” she continued dimly, sighing as she finished her sentence. “He seems to not care about me at all.”

“Many a union has been built on much less,” I reasoned. I knew exactly why Niklaus did what he did. He couldn’t exactly tell Katerina he was going to drain her blood in a ritual. He had to use a different approach. But apparently, his lack of attention had given her doubts.

It wasn’t at all surprising when she asked, “Is it wrong to want more?”

“Did you have more with Trevor?” I asked back. I knew how Trevor was also dazzled by her charms, especially by the way he treated and talked to her.

Katerina hesitated before saying, “Trevor believes that he loves me, but true love is not real unless it's returned. Do you agree?” she turned to me.

I breathed before stating the plain-spoken truth about myself. “I do not believe in love, Katerina.”

“That is too sad for me to accept, my lord,” she answered. “Life is too cruel. If we cease to believe in love, why would we want to live?”

Her answered had startled me. After five hundred years living as a vampire I could never think of love and affection anymore. Life is indeed cruel and there is no more space for love. There was just so much I’ve seen in this world to make me stop believing. But her brief speech had given me a new perspective.

I had not much time to think of it further because at that precise moment Niklaus showed up, returning from his late night hunt. He had been feeding for the whole night. He was pretty lousy to let Katerina see the blood stain on his clothes, but he gave her a fine reason for it. As they left, I returned to think of what she said.

Some days afterwards, I talked to the witches and they had found a way to spare the doppelganger’s life. Meaning I could save Katerina’s life. The witches created an elixir that was able to rejuvenate her life. Being happy, I came to Niklaus and told him this. Somehow, he managed to sniff it out of me—he realized that I cared for her. I denied it, of course. He then told me not to bother, because a human’s life means to an end.

Later at the night, Niklaus came at me, angry and raged, saying that Katerina has escaped. He thought I had told her about the ritual, which I didn’t. A flush of disappointment rushed through me. She didn’t trust me. That was what I’d thought. Just the day I found the elixir, she and I had a very intense conversation and I made her promise to trust me, no matter what. She had agreed before but now it seemed that she had broken our promise.

Merely a second after the thought, the disappointment shifted into anger. She hadn’t trusted me! Why had she not trust me?

“I will find her,” I told Klaus. “You have my word.”

I didn’t find her in the end. Trevor turned out to be the traitor and centuries later I was able to find him and kill him. I had also found Katerina but she went back to what she was best at—running away.

Despite all that, it was how my second love ended. I swore to myself I would not make the same mistake all over again. But honestly, I had no idea how much I was wrong about that.
