.09 | The Promise
The first thing Merida noticed beyond waking up was that her body no longer ached or felt as if it were on fire in certain parts. She felt completely healed, which was to be expected because she healed with extreme quickness in her mutant form.
She realized she still hadn't shifted yet.
She flexed her claws silently, testing out her limbs and making sure she had full range of motion with them. Her body still felt heavy and leaden as if it was weighed down. Her eyes stirred quietly behind her feline eyelids.
There was a faint beeping sound around her that sounded eerily familiar to a heart monitor. The smell of something like sterilizing fluids hit her nose and it twitched in recognition to the aromas and sounds that were stirring her awake.
These smells were familiar.
These were the smells of a hospital.
She knew this because when her mother died, she burned to memory the smell that had encompassed the hospital. It was something she would never forget.
Merida jerked away with flustered movements. There was something cold and metal beneath her body and she briefly wondered if she was laying atop some kind of table.
The panic that was starting to swarm through her vengeance filled veins started to fester until it was bubbling. Her entire body stirred in a violent daze. Her feline eyes blinked once, twice and then the third time they shot open fully as a sudden and a distinct feeling of fear filled her entire being.
There were two muffled voices in front of her and she could smell their own fear wafting off them as it hit her nose. Their fear only made the beast within her more panicked. She was waking up and coming to in a foreign place, which didn't bode well for anyone on the receiving end.
"She's waking up!" A feminine, yet hoarse voice whispered harshly.
White hot fear bubbled to the surface as Merida's feline form started to muster the courage to try and stand on whatever flat and cold surface she was. Her right paw forced herself up and then her other paws followed suit more quickly than the doctor and nurse had anticipated.
Her feral eyes glowed with a menacing gaze, a gaze that wanted to know where she was and who they were. Something ripped from the top of her leg, igniting a small prickling sensation as the IV needle that had been inside her limb was pulled out with her sporadic movements.
"Hurry, get me the syringe,"
The man's voice was panicked, which only made Merida's veins course with more untamed fear.
"But, doctor, we've already given the patient six doses. This could be lethal-,"
