Being natural is something Sam strives for. To him being gay is as natural and normal as his left arm. He never understood why it was an issue until he started middle school and dating was overrated. It sounded nice though!

He decided to ask his crush out on a date. He waited until the last minute of school for the sixth- graders to make their way down the steps in front of the school. That's when Sam seen Leslie and decided to get it over with. Leslie's entourage seen him coming and went their seperate ways to head home. Sam was left alone with his crush. It honestly didn't feel as good as he thought it would.

To break the silence, Sam told Leslie how he saved up enough money to take a friend to the music fair that weekend. Leslie's face screwed up into a rather rude, disgusted look that let Sam know instantly. He was being rejected. He didn't wait to hear anything else. He ran home to his mother, and he told her all about Leslie. His mother told him dating wasn't good for his grades anyway.

For weeks after that, Sam got bullied. Leslie was, of course, the best football (soccer) player in the whole middle school. I mean how is that not attractive?Leslie was also a boy.

Sam thought he was being bullied because he was rejected, Sam's mum, Kate, had thought Leslie was a girl. That is until she went to the meeting with the principal. Sam's father decided to let his mother handle things related to school. Sam's mum decide not to tell him, anyway. She didn't know how he would react. He says he supports GLBT people and their rights. But it's easy for a father to approve men in general being gay. It becomes another story when it's your son that's gay.

( My dad said he supported, but got pretty upset and said he failed me as a father and I've failed him as a son! Such a dramatic hypocrate!!)

Nobody told Sam that being gay was going to be a bit of trouble. That sixth-grade memory always pops into his head when he thinks of love and dating. Not asking another boy out, but being so blatantly rejected. The feeling shook him deeply. He couldn't even think about grade school without feeling rejected, as he never fit in. Being gay seemed so natural, as it is anyway. But to Sam, it's all he knows.
