It's nearly midnight, no one has been leaving their houses at night, since the disappearance of one of my classmates, everyone is scared, no one is sure if she ran away, got kidnapped, or murdered. Since there is a huge forest next to my house, that connects to the river, no one comes around here, everyone is scared of the forest. I'm not sure why. But that means I get a chance to go for a walk at night, I love walking up to the hill and just staring at the sky, at the stars and the moon.
I got home from my walk, nothing special, I'm ready to get to sleep when I hear a knock at my door. I go to open the door and Gilbert Conboy and Cole Colton are at my door. I don't know them, they just go to my school that's why I know of them. "Hills, we need your help." Gilbert comments. I'm not exactly sure why would they need my help though. "With what? It's not like I'm your friend." I comment not trying to sound mean.
"We want to bury a body," Cole says, he looks serious. I'm confused and I don't know what to say. "I'm joking," he laughs, I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding "we want to burry a memory box, for when we are older and thought since there is a forest next to your house, it would be a great place to hide it." They say showing me the memory box, well it's not exactly a box but like a bookbag, like one they would use in the late 1800s. "Did you walk here?" I ask since nobody walks here nor comes even in a car.
"No, you dumbo, my car is right there." Gilbert point to a red car. It's cool, it looks from the eighties. "So what exactly do you need my help for?" I ask confused, it's not like it's an everyday activity burying something. "Can you help us, um, dig the hole?" Cole stutters, he generally doesn't stutter. "Sure," I say not exactly convinced "I have shovels. Do you need one?" This is definitely not an everyday activity that I want to keep doing.
After I gave them the shovels and started digging, I decided to go home, if my parents find out I'm not there it's not going to be pretty. The next day was a Wednesday, not sure why Cole and Gilbert wanted to bury a memory box on a Tuesday, but right now it does not matter. I got to school like I normally do, no one says 'hi' to me or anything and I'm not bothered by it at all. I pass Cole and Gilbert in the hallway, they weirdly say 'hi'. "Hey, when did you finish burying the box?" I ask because they still have my shovels. "A little after you left, we left your shovels by a bush in front of your house," Cole tells me. "we didn't know where you wanted us to leave them." He smiles.
"Don't worry about it. Thanks." I smile, I really don't talk to anyone at school unless I'm forced to. No one talks to me really, which I don't mind to be utterly honest. I stay there on stand completely still until I hear an announcement through the intercom. With that, I go to my classroom. The teacher is there standing still quiet, everyone is confused as so am I. "What's going on?" Somebody asks, "I'm not sure, I got asked to keep you guys in the classroom until the principal came." The teacher says. I look over to the desk next to me.
Emily, the girl who sat next to me, well she's short, light-eyed, blond, pretty in general. Everyone liked her, sadly she's been missing for a couple of days now, maybe even two weeks not exactly sure, to be honest, I don't know what people saw, or see in her. She's your typical dumb blond, who every boy is obsessed with. I have no hate toward her, nor she is my favorite person in the world. I really don't care for her.
Everyone is still quiet when the principal comes in, luckily for him, the school is small so he can go and tell everyone whatever he needed to say and couldn't do through the intercom. "Class of 2022, we have gotten news from the police, about your own classmate Emily," He starts, no emotion shown, he has a straight face, as is he was a robot. "and not only that, another classmate of yours has gone missing Kristen, she is now considered a missing person." Again no emotion showed as if he didn't care. Kristen is nearly the same description as Emily, short, light-eyed, and blond.
Everyone is confused, not sure where he is going with this information, everyone is still quiet which is quite weird for my class. "Your classmate Emily was found yesterday morning she was found dead at the side of the river," Everyone gasped including me, who doesn't make much noise, "there were signs of torture, Emily had been missing for 14 days, it has been confirmed that she has been dead for 5 days." He says again emotionless. If Emily was kidnapped and tortured and then murder, I think the same is going to happen to Kristen. And probably it is the same person or people, who did that to Emily. Wait, the river, the only way to the river is through the forest, the only way to enter the forest is next to my house. Fuck, my family and I will become suspects, I know that for sure.
My theory was confirmed when the principal asked me to follow him to his office, where I saw my parents, and evidently the police. They sat me down and started asking questions, I was nervous, I was sweating, stuttering, I got nauseous, and couldn't speak. "Guys go light on her," my mom says, "she really doesn't like speaking, especially if she is being harassed." She said, she was mad but spoke lightly and calmly.
The officer sighed, "Luna, what do you know about Emily?" He's trying to get me to say things I clearly have no idea about. "Do you want me to tell you everything I know?" I said trying not to get frustrated, the officer nodded. "I know that Emily was loved by nearly everyone, some people were even obsessed with her, and no, I'm not going to name anyone because, to be frank with you, I couldn't name a single person," I say all of this without thinking, which I have to learn to manage. "and whoever did that to Emily has to know her, personally it could have been an ex or a close friend. When I was younger, I was friends with Emily and she was downright scared to death even to go near that forest. And if she was tortured there, which I frankly don't think so, she would have shouted, and we would have heard." I say this and my mom keeps going. "She is in the right officer neither my husband nor I heard anything coming from the forest." Am I lying about not hearing things coming from the forest? Yes, yes I am, and so are my parents. Why? I'm not sure, but what I can't put together is why my mom also lied.
