~~Michael~~

I'm making my way through the school hallways. It's been a pretty good day so far. I haven't gotten much homework, Bob Marley is blasting through my headphones, and I packed sushi for my lunch later.

"Hey dude!" I hear from behind me. I recognise it as my best friend Jeremy Heere. We've known each other for 12 years now. I turn off my music and lower my headphones.

I turn around and we do our handshake. It's more like a complicated high five, but that's not important right now.

"Hey Jeremy. How's it been?"

"Pretty great actually!" his voice is really bubbly

"Oh?" I tease, "What's got you so excited?"

"You won't believe this but Christine and I have a huge date tonight!"

Oh...

OH...

"That's... great dude." I start coughing. "Sorry, I have to run, I'll see you later"

I speed-walk to the restroom.

Today was going so well, but now I'm retching over a toilet as a flurry of blue flowers and blood spatters flow from my mouth.

Did I forget to mention that I have a huge crush on Jeremy. A crush that I know is one-sided. That's why I'm currently coughing tulips out of my lungs.

I have Hanahaki disease. Hanahaki disease is an ailment where flowers start forming in your lungs as a result of one-sided love. It is removable, but you lose your feelings for that person along with the flowers. It can get lethal after a long time, but I would rather die than live without these feelings, so I leave it alone. Noone knows. Not even my moms.

I take a few breaths... a date with Christine...

My throat is blocked once again. More flowers. Tears are rolling freely down my face from the pain. This coughing fit is much more harsh than the others. A lot more blood comes out.

It all started with a singular blue petal. Jeremy had just gotten to our middle school lunch table and seemed really excited to tell me about how this cute girl he saw in the hallway talked to him. I was truly happy that he was so happy, but that didn't stop the jealousy from rising in my throat. I didn't realise that it had manifested into a flower petal until I coughed it out into my hand.

"You okay dude? What's that?"

I just shrugged at him and shoved the petal into my pocket. "I dunno man, must've been caught in my teeth, I'm fine." It was a lie.

You learn about hanahaki in 5th grade health, so I knew exactly what it was.

My flowers are finally done coming out. I wipe my mouth and eyes with toilet paper and flush the toilet. I'm glad it didn't clog considering how many tulips were floating in the red water.

I'm glad my hoodie is red. Blood is harder to see on red.

Once I can finally breathe clearly, and my face looks somewhat presentable, I make my way to class. I try to avoid skipping because missing a class in highschool piles up a lot of work, especially junior year.

~~Time skip to after school~~

I manage to get through the rest of the day without another coughing fit, lunch was hard though.

Since jeremy isn't here, we can't work on apocalypse of the damned level 10. We've been stuck on that level since the squipcident. We don't talk about the squipcident. Just imagine it as a mind controlling robot that looks like keanu reeves trying to turn the whole school into a hive mind. Oh, and the computer made jeremy ignore me until it was deactivated. That's when my petals turned into flowers.
