Ciel Phantomhive was reading letters from different people and companies at his desk as Sebastian Michaelis, his devoted butler, was building up the fire in the fireplace. His fiance, Elisabeth Midford, was in the guest bedroom deep in slumber, since it was very late at night. Ceil groaned as he noticed the tall stack of letters he hadn't finished reading and the small pile of papers he had to read. It was several hours past the time he would normally head to bed but he wanted to get his work done before falling asleep. Sebastian, however, didn't object staying up late to get Ciel into bed.
It was a routine since he started searching for his long-lost older sister, Y/N Phantomhive, who was missing since he became the young earl. He forgot all about her years ago and he started to remember having an older sister. Years he had searched for her, but nothing. No Y/n, only tiny clues of where she could be and what possibly would have happened to her, but no sign of her. He had dreams of his memories of him as a child playing with her but the strangest thing was that he didn't remember what she looked like so there was always a blur of what she looked like, even her voice was muffled. Ciel is now 22 and his wedding was a few months away. He hoped that he would find her in time to have her come to his wedding and meet his future bride.
Sebastian knew about this, of course, and he would try to help his young master but Ciel wanted to find Y/n on his own.
A yawn came out of Ceil's mouth and Sebastian only turned his head towards him to see Ceil's droopy eyes look at the paper in his hand. Sebastian sighed while settling the fire poker back to where it belonged and pulling out his pocket watch to see that it was late. Very late.
"Young master, I really do believe that you should get some rest and let me scan through the papers for you. In the morning, I will give you a brief summary of every paper. Butler's honor." He said raising his right hand as if he was making an oath in court. Ciel sighed in defeat and stood up while pushing his chair behind his legs. He knew that he would either get some sleep and have to do all of this tomorrow or let Sebastian have no sleep at all to do what he promised.
"Fine! You can help just this once, but if something goes wrong, then no more, is that understood?" Ciel groaned and Sebastian bowed his head in response. Once he lifted his head, he saw Ciel quivering while bent over the desk, his hair curtaining his face. Sebastian walked over to him and could hear Ciel whimper silently.
"It's been years, Sebastian. Why aren't I giving up? I should just give up. She's probably dead for all I know. But she was the only thing I had left before you came to my life, Sebastian. And now..." Ciel collapsed into his chair and put his elbows on his knees and his face in his hands, sobbing.
"And now all I have as a family is gone."
"I understand, Master. But please, you must get some rest. We can't give up now. We might be so close and we just don't know it yet. Come. Let's get you into bed."
The rest of the night both Sebastian and Ciel were mute. The whole Phantomhive Manor was silent and still, once Ciel was in his own dreamland of where the happy memories of his sister were found and treasured inside. Sebastian fled to his master's office and scanned through the letters with his demon-like speed then made sure that everything else was suitable for the morning before retreating to his room to rest.
