Beating Hearts [Knight's Rest #1]

The sleek black BMW pulled up into an empty parking spot in the car park of the train station. There was still seven minutes until her train was timetabled to arrive. That was a good enough excuse to spend a few minutes extra with the handsome hunk sat next to her.

Or Baloney, as his friends has so dearly referred to him as. That made her smile.

Her seatbelt sounded with a click as she released it, but she couldn't bring herself to leave just yet. "Thanks for dropping me off. You didn't have to." She smiled at him politely, suddenly feeling awkward despite having enjoyed the easy conversation that had passed between them on the ride over. Suddenly, it got hot even though it was nearing the end of October.

He turned to her. "It's fine," he brushed it off. "This was on my way, anyway."

Her lips turned up into a small smile as she tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. There was no point as it sprang back to hanging over her face. His hands itched to reach out and tame it back in place. Fisting his hands at his side, he gulped.

She was far too tempting for her own good. Such a vixen.

A shiver ran down his spine as the sound of the soft lull of her voice. If he could record it and play it over again and again, he would. "No, it wasn't."

He couldn't deny it, not with the way she was looking at him with those beautiful grey orbs of hers.

Darcy rolled her eyes playfully before they drifted towards the digital clock on his dashboard. There were only a few minutes left. If she didn't leave now then she would surely miss her train and have to wait on the platform for fifteen minutes until the next one arrived. "I should probably go now." Her voice held distinct disappointment and she didn't even bother trying to hide it.

"Yeah, you probably should." His voice was quiet and his words wistful as his eyes remained glued on her, almost as if he was in a daze. "I wouldn't want you to miss her train." But yes, yes he would.

"Bye," she threw one last smile at him before she turned to head out of the car. If she didn't leave now then she would be sure to miss her train.

Panic stricken, he reached out and wrapped his hand around her wrist, tugging on it slightly.

She turned around to throw him a quizzical brow.

"Next time you need a place to crash, you're welcome at the hotel."

Her eyes focused on his plump, temping mouth as it shaped out the words, almost missing what he had said. It took her a moment to collect herself before she was able to respond. He didn't seem to mind though. "You should have told me it was your hotel."

His eyebrows shot up in surprise. "How did you find out?" He asked, suspicious. She had either found out from someone or had put the puzzle pieces together. Though he was sure that she had been too drunk the night before and too hungover this morning for the latter.

She shrugged. "Romeo told me."

"Of course, he did," he muttered under his breath, more so to himself but she heard it anyway. "The offer still stands."

Her lips turned up. "I'll take you up on that sometime." She promised before exiting the car and rushing towards the station entrance.

Thelonious watched as she ran up the stairs and past the automatic doors. His heart stopped beating for a minute as she turned around and threw him one last heart-warming smile with an equally eager wave good-bye before turning left and disappearing from his sight.

He promised himself it wasn't a good-bye, but rather a see-you-soon.

Once his heart had calmed down, he released a sigh he didn't know he was holding in. Turning on the engine and switching to 'D' for drive, he pulled out of the car park and headed back to the hotel. There was no point pretending he had any errands anymore.

It had been a ruse to spend some extra time with her from the start and everyone knew it.
