Seneca

Early spring and the world was just waking up from winter. Already the game keepers were rushing about in the control room adding bits here and there. It was still a few months until the games would begin but there was so much to get done that everyone was busy.

Seneca Crane, known throughout the capitol for his Gamekeeper skills and envied for his beard, stood on a balcony in the control centre overseeing all the work. Now and again he’d give someone a new instruction, or correct someone if it wasn’t how he wanted something to be but otherwise he stood proud and content above them all, a pleased smile on his face.

His secretary, Abigail Hawk, sat in the office behind him, staring dreamily through the glass at the head Gamekeeper. She’d always had a soft spot for him, ever since they were children, but then they grew up and Seneca threw himself into his work. She knew nothing could ever come out of loving him but she never gave up on him either, hoping instead that one day he’d turn around and realise she was always there for him, even when he didn’t notice her.

When summer came around and the tributes from each district were chosen, she backed the star crossed lovers from district 12, even though she knew she would be killed for it. She helped their always-drunk mentor get the money for the girl on fires sponsor gifts, and did all she could to help the tributes from 12, because she knew what it was like to have a love that was doomed.

When Seneca found out how and why his secretary had “dissappeared” he did something that had never been done before. He changed the rules. Now two tributes from the same district could win. His reason was to make the games more interesting, but really the real reason was that he’d always had feelings for Abigail aswell but never been able to tell her because of where they lived, and since they could no longer be together, he hoped that the two tributes she died to support could stay together, like he and his love could not. After that point he knew he’d do anything to make sure both won.

When the Peacekeepers came to collect him he followed them quietly, and he died with a smile on his face knowing that the tributes were both alive and he was finally able to join his love.
