Pocahontas and I sat next to each other in English. Since today was the first day, all we did was fill out stuff about us in sheets we would turn in. For the first few minutes, Pocahontas and I sat in silence. Finally Pocahontas was the first to break the silence.
"So, how do you like it here?" Pocahontas asked. I looked up, trying to think of a reasonable answer.
"Well, I guess it's not too much different from Illinois. Its nice to have friends for once," I said with a shrug, but immediately clamped my mouth shut at the last thing I said. But Pocahontas just smiled at me.
"Don't worry, I understand. When I first came here, the girls took me under their wing right away," Pocahontas replied warmly. Conversation went on like this for the rest of class. I learned that Pocahontas really liked the outdoors and that her family tree goes back as far as the 1600s! However, I still had one thing to ask her.
"Hey, how come you and the girls took me in within one minute of meeting me?" I asked curiously. Pocahontas looked up from her paper.
"Well, that's kind of the weird thing. We just know who belongs with us. I guess you could say 'our kind' is different from the rest. Some pretty crazy things happen to us. Its hard to explain. But you'll understand when it happens to you," Pocahontas explained carefully. I stared ahead in confusion.
"What do you mean when 'when it happens to me'?" I inquired.
"Don't worry about it. Let's just get to our next class," Pocahontas assured me, picking up her books.
"Ok, well, I'll see you later," I called out as she headed to her next class. Before I could leave myself, Pocahontas poked her head through the doorway.
"All the girls are meeting at Ariel's after school, if you were interested. We'll swing by your locker to show you where her house is," Pocahontas said as she headed out the door once more.
"Ok, see you then!" I said with glee. First day and I already have something to do after school. I'm pretty proud of myself, this is definitely progress. I wonder how Anna is doing? I shouldn't be worried, she probably already has a million friends.
