That evening, as the two of them prepared to go to bed, Eddy stopped Brett before he could go upstairs. "It's too cold up there, sleep down here."
"But Eddy," Brett replied. "We can't have the fire going all night, so it's still going to be cold!"
Both of them knew that even though it would be cold, it would certainly be warmer than upstairs."Look," Eddy said. "I don't want you to get sick. You can sleep on the couch, I'll sleep on the floor. Sounds good?"
Brett muttered under his breath, but was secretly grateful for the accomodations. "I'll get my stuff."After bringing his blanket and pillow down, he looked at Eddy and opened his mouth to speak. "Look, I know I've been rough with you the past few weeks, and I apologize. You have been incredibly kind and patient." Eddy blushed at these words, surprised. "It's just," Brett sighed. "You remind me so much of my friend, the one I got in that argument with. And, and I know this isn't over a fight, but the fact that you'll likely die for the same reason my friend did is just..." He looked away.
"Brett, it's okay," Eddy reached out to hug him. "Even if we do die, we'll be together, right?"
Brett sighed. "I guess..."Then Eddy began thinking about what Brett had said. They would likely die. Sure, he was ready for it. Then he remembered Lucy.
"Hey Eddy, you alright?" Brett instantly knew Eddy was upset.
Eddy shook his head. "No, it's fine."
"Please Eddy...."
"It's just... Lucy. I know we're already separated, but... Anyways it's fine, I probably would have been forced to not see her again anyway." Eddy instantly felt bad for talking so much.Brett sighed again. "I'm so sorry, it's my fault I should have begun preparing sooner..."
"No, it's my fault!" Eddy cried. "I was the one who cut three stacks of logs instead of five!"
Brett looked surprised for a moment. Then he returned to his gruff mode. "No, it's fine. Nothing we can do about it anyway." With that he turned away, trying to fall asleep.Eddy just lay there, staring at the ceiling. Why was he so stupid and lazy?
