Alvin stepped outside. The smell of pizza and car exhaust filled his lungs. This new home truly seemed nothing like home to Alvin. He missed the sweet air from his old house in a remote town in Alabama. He had moved with his brothers Simon and Theodore after the tragic and untimely death of their father. The rent for their family house had been much too high, and the three boys were forced to move out to NY where they had a temporary home until they could sustain themselves.
Nevertheless, Alvin was the last of his brothers to be unemployed. Everybody had always seen him as the "leader" of the trio, and he wished they could all see him now. He had just left his third interview that week, and it was only Tuesday. Employers were obviously hesitant to hire a chipmunk already, but Alvin's lack of team skills were the last straw. He was beginning to feel hopeless.
He entered the dimly lit apartment, setting his keys down on a messy countertop. "Simon?" he called out. "Theodore?" Alvin realized that he was home alone, and had free reign of the flat. He put on his favorite music (xxxtentacion) and scrolled through twitter. The humor he saw on the app was a light at the end of the meaningless void he felt this year had been. At that moment, he got a call from a blocked number. He had been taught over and over throughout his life to not answer calls from numbers you didn't know, but today, he was feeling lucky.
