I had just finished my day, school, homework and whatever other chores Darry had asked me to do. I grab my jacket from the doorway and announce where I was going as I walked out. I made my way over to the vacant lot, seeing the silhouette of Johnny sitting there in the grass. The sun was setting, the sky was bright reds and pinks, with hints of purple hues.

"What a beautiful sunset." I say, sitting beside him.

"Yeah, it is." He said softly

He looked up at me, the colors from the sunset refected in his dark eyes. We didn't talk much when we were
out here, instead we enjoy eashothers company. When we do talk, it's usually about something that's
bothering us or just the world around us. "He and I had a closer bond than we did with anyone else in the
gang. I felt we understood each other, he was someone I know I could always talk to if something was going
on. I couldn't really talk with Darry as he wasn't all that sympathetic, and Soda usually would say it'll get better.
For a while we sat in a comfortable quiet.

The sun went down and the stars came out, covering the lot in a pale glow as the fireflies blinked around us.
The silver moonlight shimmered on Johnny's dark hair, I often caught myself looking at him more than
anything else. He was... beautiful, with defined but warm features, his dark eyes that hid so much pain deep
inside them. His broken but genuine smile. He doesn't deserve what this life puts him through. I couldn't
understand why anyone would want to hurt someone like him.
"Hey pony." He said, brining me out of my thoughts

"Yeah."
"What are things like beyond this, what would life be like if things were different?"

I paused to think for a moment, trying to formulate an answer from all the thoughts swirling around in my
mind.

"No matter what this life puts us through I wouldn't change a thing. This life is what shaped us into who we
are today. We've been through so much and have overcome it all together. This life is what brings us together,
the understanding that we share of the situations we're in, the way we are there for each other no matter what.
If things were different, it's pretty likely we wouldn't be sitting here right now, if everything was easier we
wouldn't have come together during the hard times and learned to rely on ourselves and the others around us
and formed the gang. We wouldn't need each other like we do now, we wouldn't have formed the bonds built
on that understanding of each other's stuggles."

I look back over at Johnny and it almost looks like he's tearing up, but he's got a smile on his face.

"You're right, no matter how bad this life can seem. It's our life and there's nothing really better, at least for a
couple of greasers like us."

He looks back up at the stars, the lighting causing shadows to fall over his face from his bangs. He looked so
calm sitting there, comfortable by my side. I shifted a bit closer to him, again looking at him smiling at the
starts.

"Hey Johnny." I say

"What is it Pony?"

"Do you ever get the feeling that someone just, well is the one thing in life you wanna keep forever."

"Pony"

"Yeah."

"l think that feelings love." He says

I have no idea what I'm supposed to say, if he's right, if that is love. How am I supposed to tell him that it's him
I feel like that about, tell him that I love him.

Here goes nothing. "Well, that's the way I feel about you. I don't ever want to loose you. I guess that means l, I
love you Johnny."

He didn't need to say anything, the smile on his face told me everything I needed to know. He looked over to me, tears in his eyes.

"Nobody's ever said something like that to me.I love you too, Ponyboy."

I wrapped my arms tightly around him, pulling him close. He laid his head on my shoulder. For a while we sat like that, watching the sky and the fireflies. Listening to the crickets and the frogs. Until we fell asleep like that, wrapped up in eachother's arms, under a blanket made of only stars. It was peaceful, like nothing else in the world mattered at all. Like there was nothing else but this moment in time.
