Suna pulled down the hem of his shirt and reached for his phone. He was changing out of his clothes from volleyball practice in the locker room. The remaining sunlight gave off a warm orange hue. He turned on his phone to see the time, 5:27 PM. Under the clock was a mini icon, signifying a notification from his chat messages. Opening his phone, he saw that he had a message from Atsumu.
Miya 1: Hey, isn't this Y/N?
*insert video recording of Y/N with a man eating at a cafe*Sunarin: ?
Sunarin: Who is that.
Sunarin: When did you take this?
Sunarin: Where was this?Miya 1: At that popular cafe, I heard lots of couples go there
Miya 1: You think they're dating? They're sharing some cutesy parfaitSuna deadpanned at his phone, his eyes darting across the screen. Atsumu's text was echoing in his mind. Y/N is at a cafe frequented by couples while eating a parfait decorated with strawberry hearts with some dude? Suna thought that he and Y/N had something developing. They'd flirt all the time, at least that's what Suna thought. Maybe he's been misinterpreting their signals. During Suna's epiphany, Atsumu had already spammed him with more texts.
Miya 1: Man I totally thought you guys were a thing or something
Miya 1: I'm totally better looking than that guy
Miya 1: Who even is he? I don't think I've seen him around schoolSunarin: Do you really think they're dating?
Miya 1: Idk, Y/N never mentioned that they're dating anyone
Miya 1: But it doesn't seem impossibleSuna felt his chest get tighter with every second passing. He never knew it'd bother him so much to see Y/N be with someone other than him. He thought he'd be fine just being friends with Y/N. Do friends get this upset over finding out they're dating someone?
**next day at school**
"Hey, Suna! Did you do the homework from last night? I totally got home late and passed out before I got to do it," Y/N lightly speed walked in the hall to catch up to the brown haired boy. Suna didn't even turn to look at them as he simply kept walking. He said nothing in response to the question. "Why are you leaving me on heard? Are you grumpy cause Kita caught you slacking again?" Y/N tailed behind him, trying to get his attention. Suna ignored Y/N for the entire day, even after practice, when the two of them would usually walk home together.
Y/N had no choice but to walk back home in uncomfortable silence. There was only one route back to their respective homes, so it was unavoidable. They walked behind Suna dejected.
The two Inarizaki students made it to the intersection where their paths split. Y/N paused for a second before mustering in a soft voice, "Sorry if I did anything to make you mad. See you tomorrow, Suna." Their head was down, staring at their shoes before looking up at Suna as he responded to them for the first time all day.
"Are you going out with someone?"
His words felt out of the blue to Y/N, who rarely talks to other people besides their best friend, Suna, and a few select people.
"Huh? No, why? What's up with this question?" Y/N was dumbfounded; they tried to read Suna's expression for any clarification but could only discern a bit of anxiety.Suna bit his tongue. He still couldn't tell why Y/N would be in such a situation if they weren't dating anyone. All his worries were bubbling up into various 'what ifs' until he couldn't stand it anymore. He had to just ask before he lost his mind.
"Atsumu sent me a video of you with some guy at a cafe yesterday. What were you doing there?" The stone faced boy tried to ask nonchalantly, but Y/N finally seemed to get a gist for what's happening now.
"Oh, him. Yeah, I went to the new cafe with him since he's visiting for the week. He's my cousin, Suna." A sly smirk creeped onto Y/N's face. They could see Suna's expression turn into shock for a split second before morphing back into his usual indifferent appearance.
"Sunaaaaaa," Y/N cheekily dragged out his name, "Don't tell me you're jealous cause you thought I was dating him."
Suna turned his back towards Y/N, trying to hide his embarrassment. His head tilted down in an attempt to conceal the growing heat from his cheeks. The same orange sun that had Suna dazed in the locker room was now his savior, disguising the light redness on his face.
"You wish..." He said in a voice, bordering a whisper. He hesitated a step before quickly remarking, "But next time you want to go to a cafe, go with me." Suna continued walking off on the path towards his house, leaving Y/N stunned at his sudden boldness.
They finally snapped out of it, staring at Suna's back, slowly exiting their field of view. Letting out a sigh of relief from the stress of being ignored all day, Y/N could only laugh. They couldn't wait to ask Suna out for a totally casual cafe outing tomorrow.
