It was all a blur, it happened so quickly.
We were fighting each other, everyone fighting each other. We weren’t exactly loyal to the people on our side. The only person we were loyal to was our partner, only because when we had nothing, we always had our partner.
Oliver’s eyes were wide in fear. His sword in his hand didn’t seem to belong there. He had always been so sweet and gentle, but this battle- this war- had changed everyone. It had even changed innocent Oliver, and forced him to become a fighter.
He was better fit as a scientist, not a fighter.
His Monster looped around his legs, the nine tails flicking about and eyes flashing with electricity.
“Oliver, you don’t need to do this.” I said nervously. Aqua stood stubbornly by my side, an adorable pet compared to Oliver’s Ninetail. She flattened her ears and crouched down, ready to pounce if needed.
Luke leaped over the ruins of the building to stand at my side, between Oliver and the strange machine. “We can’t allow you to turn it on, Oliver.” Luke panted. Flames joined Aqua, even growling menacingly at the Ninetail.
The Ninetail glanced at Oliver, who nervously glanced at it. Oliver closed his eyes, as if in pain, before turning to me.
He stared into my eyes and said, “I’m so sorry, Tess. I have to do this. But I do promise to find you. I will find you, if it’s the last thing I do.”
And, in a flash, just like that, he leapt through a doorway that had just opened, and the machine behind us clicked to life.
There was no point in fighting it; the room was sealed shut. The ceiling was caved in, true, but the ceiling was far up above, impossible to reach, even if I were to manipulate the wind.
Luke and I turned to each other. He smirked, though he was tense in fear and expectation. “Should’ve known it had an external button.” I smirked as well, though I felt like breaking down in tears. “Yeah, come on, Luke. You’re the smart one.”
“No, you are. I just follow your lead.”
A bright light came from the machine, and we turned towards it, shading our eyes. Aqua and Flames stood side by side, crouched close to the ground and facing the ominous portal.
“Well, partner, we always stick together, right?” Luke asked, voice tight. “Yep. Through thick and thin,”
“Black and white,”
“Fear and unknowing,”
“War and loss,”
“And love and hate.”
Despite our fear, we managed to laugh at our little saying that we’d made up what felt like eons ago.
A loud whirring sound began to build in the room, emanating from the machine. Luke suddenly wrapped his arms around me; being the Protector, it was his job to do what ever it took to keep me safe.
I began to cry as the light grew blinding, seen from the corner of my vision though my face was buried in Luke’s hoodie.
And just like that, in a single flash, we were gone.
An interesting place to start a story.
Too bad it’s not really the beginning, huh?
Yeah, it’s not.
Let’s get to the real beginning, then.
Enough cliffhangers and all that… for now…
