As the sphere I’d thrown hit the ground, it didn’t shatter. Instead, it bounced once before morphing into a small cat-like, maybe more fox-like creature. It was mostly white, with black paws and black-tipped, large, cat-like ears. Its tail was extremely puffy, black tipped as well, and its small nose was a little black dot. Swirls of blue-green wound around its overlarge eyes and around its tail. The huge eyes practically glowed, and were a deep teal with highlights of blue-green.
The creature landed with its fur bristling, facing the same direction as the stranger above me.
It had only been a few seconds now. The stranger had caught the fireball between his two hands, and it now shimmered between his hands. Though we were technically still undercover, I recognized the tousled, shaggy brown hair.
“Matt!” I exclaimed, surprised. He glanced down at me, and the fireball simply dissipated. “Really?” he asked me. I stood up quickly, wiping rocks off of my jacket. “What?” I asked innocently.
“You’re still calling me that?” he asked, annoyed. “Jeez, sorry, Luke,” I said, waving my hands in the air as I said Luke, “It’s not like we were undercover for six months or anything!”
He rolled his eyes and turned just in time to catch another fireball. “Oh, thanks!” he said, simply tossing it back at Ryan. Ryan, who probably hadn’t been trained in his elemental abilities like me and Luke, was blasted backwards.
Luke turned to me again. “This is what I get for saving you?” he asked. I laughed and said, “Honestly, I could’ve handled it. I mean, look, Aqua’s here now.”
At this, the little Kitdy’s head popped up in the air. “Uh, no, you’re not bringing me into this.” she muttered, licking a paw idly. I gave her a, ‘Really?’ look, before turning back to Luke. “Okay, fine. Thank you for saving my life like you’re supposed to, Luke.”
“You are welcome, Tess.” Luke said, bowing dramatically and catching another fireball with one hand. “You want it?” Luke teased, holding it out to me. I leaped backwards, terrified, and he laughed before throwing it again.
“LUKE!” I yelled, shoving him. “What now?!” he demanded, wiping soot from his hands onto his blue jeans. “You know I don’t like fire, you jerk!” I yelled, shoving him again. He stumbled and fell into a large puddle, splashing it all over the place.
Glaring at me, he stood and rolled up the sleeves of his jacket. “Fine! You think you’re so good that you don’t need a Protector, do it yourself! Protect yourself! Because I’m done tonight!” He held his hands up in surrender and began backing away.
A globe began to glow in his jacket packet and burned a hole through it. It landed and bounced off the asphalt, morphing into a rather large black dog with three heads. The three heads were surrounded by flame and the dog jumped around in circles before jumping behind Luke and shoving him back to me. “Flames!” I said happily. The dog jumped to me, and as I knelt down to pet him, Luke once again stopped a fireball from crashing into me and turning me into a much crispier version of myself.
“Aqua, aren’t you supposed to be doing something?” Luke demanded my Monster. She glanced at him, then continued grooming herself. “Why bother when you’re doing it all?” she asked.
“Excuse me!” Ryan yelled. He was closer now, and his clothes were singed, holes burning through them. His sleeve was even on fire, but since he obviously could manipulate fire it wouldn’t do anything to him. “Can you at least pay attention to me?” he yelled, stomping his foot. At first I thought it was just him throwing an extremely unattractive temper-tantrum, but then flames spiraled upwards and about him, and he was suddenly surrounded in flames.
