“Hey Patrick, congratulations on the new design!” his co-workers greeted.
“Thanks.” He answers with a smile.
Patrick went outside the building he had successfully designed to see it in a clearer view, on the red bricked sidewalks that had verdant bushes of flowers that had grown across it, he stumbled upon a beautiful familiar face, Alice.
His eyes magnetically drew towards her.
“How many years had it been since last time, eh, knight?” his conversation with Knight, the cute yellow bird he tamed blurred to his consciousness, and a nostalgic love story flash backs.
--
“Eh, there’s another one today?” Manna, Alice’s seat neighbour, curiously asked.
Alice looked up to the two inches difference of her to Manna, who was grandly a tall volleyball player. “Yup” She smiled with a cute blush in her face.
It was a fluffy yellow bird with a name tag “Knight” that brought a special rose scented envelope to Alice whose seat was just beside the windy open window. It had a few wilted leaves stuck to its feathers.
“How brave of you, little Knight. You actually crossed Mrs Scruff’s bushy garden didn’t you?” She softly spoke to the bird. Then, slowly she took the small envelope from the messenger’s beak and quietly exchanged it with bread crumbs that were in her beautiful delicate hands.
“Oh, Patrick, how are you?” She sighed, looking at the envelope while unfolding it.
She smiled as she read the charming penmanship of Patrick, who was confined in the hospital today, as he had always been.
Alice and Patrick were childhood friends. They grew up being fond of each other. Even since elementary… they would shyly exchange stares. The two of them would blush, unknown that they were experiencing it together.
“Did she looked at me? Nah… I guess not.” They would stubbornly think.
But Patrick had serious illness. So he had to be confined in the hospital every day, but this did not stop their connection. Because Knight was there.
“Say Knight, can you send this to Alice? I bet she’s lonely right now.” He talked to the bird. It looked at him with sharp black eyes then obediently hopped to get the small letter.
The scent of chamomile and mint filled the air outside the hospital windows.
“Eh back already? Good boy.” He smiled.
The yellow messenger majestically flapped its wings as it left the reply letter from Alice to his lap.
“I want to see you…” He quietly said as he read the letter.
His eyes were a little teary. If only I had the power to meet you right now.

DING DING DING DONG
The school bell echoed all over the school halls. Alice was there, watching the butterflies flutter from one flower to another.
But then, the butterflies suddenly felt threatened as it quickly hid from the scurrying little Knight.
“EH? Knight? Why are you here? You don’t have a letter with you.”
It was obviously panicking. It chirped loudly like a chick.
“What are you trying to say?” Her eyes grew big.
Knight, who was a smart trained bird, wrote letters to the dusty ground.
FOLLOW ME
It wrote.
She quickly followed the bird, panicking too. This was not a very normal occurrence.
“Did something presumably happen to Patrick?!” She thought in hiatus.
She was shocked to see Patrick messed up all over the ground. He was burning hot and sweating cold. He didn’t have enough power to walk so he collapsed on the cold hospital floor.
“Please hang in there!”
She cried, afraid that she would lose someone special.
She held him carefully in her arms as he warmly rests his head on her lap.
“Alice…”
He looked up with his little strength left. “Thank you and sorry for causing you trouble.” He smiled a painful smile.
His vision blurred pitch black.
The ambulance siren was what he heard next.
That faded vision of her in his memories seemed much more colorful today. There she was with her mesmerizing big eyes even though they conveyed a message of pain and fear; they marked beautifully in his dreams.
He had been unconscious for days.
“Patrick…” her soft voice finally awakened him.
She still had those alluring eyes.
She cried in glee. “Nurse! He’s awake!”
Patrick’s sisters hurriedly rushed to his room.
His sisters finally looked stabled and calmed by the look of their faces.
Alice finally felt at peace…
She leaned towards Patrick and softly whispered, “Please take good care of yourself.” The look on her face truly engraved in his memories. It seemed a much painful smile than what he gave. She left coldly, as fast as she could.
“Patrick! Why did you actually tried to leave your room that day? Look what happened to you, you got us all worried, even Mom and Dad!” Catherine, the eldest sister cried.
“But… they’re gone. You said they went to heaven.” The youngest sister innocently said.
Patrick looked at her with pitying eyes. “You’re right.” He patted her to comfort.
It seemed as though… whenever I am missing her, my heart doesn’t feel right… I truly did want to see her, not to hurt her…
--
The flashback had finally ended
And his memories were finally revived and turned colourfully brightening.
The girl whom he’d love from the day he was born to the present time, the woman who had painfully left him without contact, her face, her eyes, how could he forget? They were artistically carved into his heart.
For a moment Alice did not quite recognize him. But from the intense look he’s giving…
“So you did take good care of yourself.” She smiled.
This time, it wasn’t a painful smile. It was a smile full of love and warmth.
“Patrick…”
He became speechless.
