The floor creaked once more. (Y/N)'s breathing hitched as (their) eyes widened. (They) turned (their) head to Seán in hopes for direction.

Seán was attempting to hold the uncomfortable position of his legs half way turned. In addition to that, the urge to go to the bathroom was settling in.

He and (Y/N) locked eyes; (Theirs) looked worry and his were of equal expression.

"What do I do?" (Y/N) mouthed.

"Don't move. We might just have to wait it out." Seán mouthed back.

But how long would it stand there, (they) thought to (themself).

A snarl-like sound emitted from the other side of the door. The sound flashed panic down their spines.

And then,

Scratching. At the door. The noise came in a pattern of three raps.

Rapraprap.

Rapraprap.

Rapraprap.

It was annoying.

What was the creature trying to do? Get inside the apartment? Destroy the door to do so? Did it smell Seán and (Y/N)? There were just too many questions that needed answers desperately.

"We need some kind of distraction. It's that, or we could be here forever." Seán whispered as quietly as he could.

(Y/N) glanced at (their) side door and began tip-toeing to it when—

BANG

BANG

BANGBANGBANGBANGBANGANG

Seán's eyes went huge. The commotion was from...the door.

Why was this happening, specifically to them? Why this apartment? There were other people on this damn floor, why didn't it go to them?

That's when the crackling began. And of course, it was door again. The zombie was trying (and succeeding) to break down the apartment door. Which, conveniently, was the duo's only barrier from it.

Adrenaline hit (Y/N) like lightning. (They) grabbed their Kanken, and rushed to the side door. Seán followed behind. (Y/N) unlocked the door, opened it with force, and threw the backpack. The pair ran out of the side door and down the stairs. Lucky for them the apartment was only on the second floor of the building.

Meanwhile, as the duo continued their descent, the pounding became louder. They heard a faint  crash, which was probably (Y/N)'s apartment door.

"That was your door!" Seán yelled right before they stopped mid-run to catch their breath.

"Holy...shit," (Y/N) huffed, glancing back up where (their) door once was.

Sure enough, a medium sized wooden chunk went sailing to the ground, resulting in a unpleasant crash.

"We'd better keep going." Seán decided, his words practically Usain Bolting out of his mouth.

They resumed their quick clomping down the stairs, and at times simultaneously glancing behind them.

"Wait! Where's the zombie?!" yelled (Y/N) while running.

They both stopped again, listening for the distant noise of what was once separated from them. Except this time it was closer.
