Prologue

Everything is so quiet that I wonder if I'm in the right place. Where there should be infinite noise coming from every room, there's now silence, a ghost house, almost. I wait for a floorboard to creek under my boots, but I forgot how silent I, myself, can be. Somewhere in the house a loud clock is ticking, the sound reaching me almost as if to remind me that time keeps on going even when your world seems to have reached an end.

My house, now empty, feels like a tomb, the memories etched on the walls and the worn-out carpets and floors. It guards the memory of a big, happy family, that once lived within these walls. We were once a happy family of ten. Yes, WERE. Since the attack, we're fewer.

The rest of us, well, we survived. We're broken, but we're alive.

My name is Violet, and this is my story.
