CHAPTER ONE

GRACE HASTINGS

"I can't come over tonight," I mumble as I let out a deep sigh.

"Oh come on, Grace. I told my Mom to order pizza. Plus I have nothing else better to do," David says and chuckles.

"My Dad said no."

"Give him your phone then. I'll talk to him."

I let out another deep, dramatic sigh as I stand up from my comfortable position on my bed and walk downstairs. I enter the kitchen, where my Mom is busy doing the dishes and my Dad with reading the newspaper. They both look in my direction as soon as I appear in the kitchen and I give them a quick smile before handing my Dad the phone.

"David really wants to talk to you," I laugh.

"He never gives up, does he?" My Dad shakes his head as he takes the phone out of my grip and put it onto his ear.

I bite my bottom lip as I watch my Dad talking to my best friend. And well, he's actually my only friend. I'm going to a private school, because my Dad only wants the best for me, which means I need the best teachers and the best education of course. I'm a typical, normal and unpopular straight A-Student.

My family is definitely way too strict sometimes and my Dad doesn't even want me to be out after eight pm except when I want to spend time with David. Well yes, David is at the same private school like I am and he has almost the same grades as me as well. We're friends since I remember and my Dad likes him a lot, and I really mean it. He would probably be the happiest man if we'd date. Even though my Dad doesn't let me date at all, but hey, David passed the test already. But never mind, it would be so awkward to date my best friend. It would be like dating my brother. Plus, David has a girlfriend called Ashley anyway and they're a couple for two years now. That's another reason why we are never going to date.

My Dad's playful growl interrupts my thoughts and I watch him hang up. I laugh and hug him for a second before I take my phone, knowing he approved.

"I love you Daddy."

"I love you too, Grace," He now laughs as well and hugs me back.

I then kiss my Mom's cheek and run back upstairs into my room. My Dad barely says no to David and we all know that. Mom knows, my Dad knows and David obviously knows best.

I take a quick shower before I put on some black, skinny jeans and a grey hoody. I quickly brush my long, strawberry blonde hair and smile at my reflection in the mirror.

As soon as I'm downstairs again, I put on my black Vans and go back to the kitchen.

"I don't trust him," My Dad growls and pauses for a few seconds, "I watched him grow up and he didn't change at all. There's something inside of his head and I'm sure we are going to hear something about him soon enough."

You worry too much, Joe," The loving voice of my Mom now appears, trying to calm my Dad down.

My Dad is a police officer and he definitely does worry too much about everything. But that's why he does such a great job and that's also why he's the most successful cop here in Stratford. He loves doing all of this and I can't deny the fact that I am proud of him, I do look up to this successful man, even if he's strict and he worries too much. Also I would never think of being a cop. But one day I want to have a job which I love as much as Dad loves his.

"I'm out now," I say, interrupting their conversation.

"Are you going alone?" My dad asks me and frowns. "It's late and getting dark already."
