CHAPTER TWO
GRACE HASTINGS
I frown as I keep my eyes fixed on the window. Maybe I want to deny the fact that I didn't open the window before I went to bed but the voice in my head knew that it's true. Also my parents wouldn't just come into my room to open a window. They barely even come in here because they want to respect my privacy. "Teenagers need their own space" they said. But I'm definitely okay with that.
I take a look at the clock. It's 2.31 am. Great. I lick my lips and take a deep breath before I stand up and walk over to the window. Goose bumps appear immediately all over my body as the cold air embraces my bare skin. So I quickly close the window and turn around to go back to my bed. But before I can even lay down again, I hear some sound of breaking glass downstairs. What kind of bad movie am I in?
My heartbeat got faster every second even though it was freaking ridiculous that all of this is really happening. I slowly walk out of my room and turn on every light I could find so I wouldn't be left out in the dark. My Dad obviously did tell me how to defend myself but that still doesn't stop my body from shaking at all.
My gaze drifts through the hallway as I walk downstairs, trying to find no one and I silently hope it's just some hallucination because of the lack of sleep I got in the past few days. At first I don't notice anything wrong but then I notice the broken vase on the floor, the flowers spread everywhere and my heart literally stops beating for a second.
"I'm going to die," was probably the first thing that rushes into my head, followed by even worse thoughts. But then Diamond, my beautiful, beautiful dog appears next to me. I let out a squeak but I quickly cover my mouth to stop myself from waking my parents. My heartbeat goes back to normal again as I kneel down to stroke her gorgeous, grey fur. Diamond's eyes meet mine and that's when I fully calm down and a genuine smile appears on my lips.
"Don't scare me like that again, Diamond," I say as I stand up again.
She runs into the kitchen, obviously begging for food and I give her some before I go back upstairs into my room.
Everything is alright, Grace. It was just Diamond who broke the vase. We all know she's just as clumsy as I am.
But still, my heart wouldn't survive another moment like this.
I take off my clothes and put on some oversized shirt and pull my hair up into some messy bun. And yes, it's a messy messy, not a tumblr messy bun.
I yawn as I sit down on my bed, looking for my phone but I can't find it anywhere. Didn't I have it when I fell asleep? I can't remember.
After I can't find it on the bed, I stand up again and walk towards my desk.
And suddenly the lights go off.
My eyebrows knit in confusion and my heart is on the edge of jumping out of my chest. I try to turn on the lights again, but it doesn't work. Something must be broke, I guess?
That's when I feel it. The cold breeze coming from outside.
The window was open again.
I swallow hard as I turn around and try to see something in the complete darkness surrounding me. But it is useless, my eyes somehow don't get used to it. What if there's someone in my room? Or did he/she/it leave through the window and no one's here except me? Just go to bed, Grace. So I slowly walk to my bed, trying not to bump into my furniture.
