Mona Skyrpingsdottyr was a chief's daughter from Skyrping, when it stood as a blooming Viking village. Mona was wild, adventurous and intelligent. She loved the animals and the ocean. Mona's two best friends were in fact animals, Sebastian, the snowy owl and Torden, the fjord horse. They loved joining Mona in her adventures. The other Vikings in her village used to call her Mona the wild since she was never around, and when she was she would always stay with the animals. Her mother Alva Lenonsdottyr didn't particularly like that Mona was given this free of a rein, but Mona's father, chief Skyrping himself, said that it couldn't hurt to let her have some freedom, until they found a fitting suiter.

Mona woke up as soon as light met her face through holes in the planks of her room. She would jump into her dress and drag her cloak over her head stepping into her boots. She skipped outside looking up at the ledge above her door. She would wish Sebastian a good morning. Not long after a tiny white head would appear from above the ledge. Mona stretched out her arm and let her owl friend land. He chirped as she pet him over his beautiful feathered back and started walking towards the stable.

She snuck quietly between the houses, trying her best to keep everyone asleep. She wanted to be out of there before the village awoke. From the inside of the barn she could hear low nickers. She slowly dragged open the heavy door, and stepped in as she gently closed it behind her. Sebastian flapped his wings a few times before taking off. He landed on a particular stall door where a fjord lifted his head looking at the bird. Mona smiled and walked over, Torden happily took the pets he was given. Mona took the leather halter that was hung over the stall door and entered the small stall. Sebastian flapped his wings to keep his balance as the door moved.

Mona pushed the bit into Torden's jaws and dragged the leather strap to the back of his ears. Mona put the rope reins above his head and gently placed them on his withers. Sebastian took a few takes with his wings and placed himself on the hind of the horse as they were led out. Mona pushed open the heavy barn door, Torden's dun fur gently shined in the yellow light from the sun. Mona led him to the outskirts of the village. She chose a stepping stone and placed him besides it. She took a firm grasp of his mane and threw herself over the round body. Mona sat up on his back and kicked him into a gallop as Sebastian took to fly besides them.

Mona loved this! This was what living felt like, she thought as they galloped along the mountain hillsides, Sebastian chirping happily as he flew besides them. Mona's hood would fall down revealing her beautiful long blonde hair that danced on the wind. She grinned happily as the wind met her face, Torden snorted in every step stretching his neck for speed.

Suddenly, Torden stopped! Mona was thrown forward clinging onto his neck, she carefully moved back to his back. Torden backed up. The dark forest in front of them silently waving in the soft breeze, casting shadow from the sun. People used to tell legends about this place, about how this was the place where the witches and trolls lived. Sebastian landed on Mona's shoulder. She carefully placed her finger on her lips telling him to be quiet. Mona would ask Torden to move forward. The horse would agree sceptically, his hoofs dragging against the ground as he entered the forest. Mona pet his neck. Her eyes swept the forest around her.

Torden's head raised in a certain direction. Mona's heart jumped, far over there she could see a big shadow, then there was a sudden sound. Survival instincts kicked in. She pulled his reins Torden spun around and bucked, his eyes filled with white and fear. Mona turned him in utter fear, galloping him away with heavy takes, her heart thundering inside her chest. Sebastian was flying besides them. Mona felt like the thing was following her, but she couldn't care enough to look back she just wanted out. Out of this cursed forest!

They ended up out on the field, all winded. Sebastian landed in Mona's lap as she looked back over her shoulder at the forest. Nothing.. there was nothing there. Relief struck, but she still stayed on guard feeling like something was watching her. All the way home, and when night fell she just laid there staring into her room. What was that in the forest..?
