As I cluttered down the stairs, flinging my rucksack over my shoulder and stuffing a half-buttered piece of toast in my mouth, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. 'Mia, sort your bloody appearance out!!' I thought to myself, wishing I'd never looked in my own direction as my breakfast was pending being thrown up. 'Mia you're late!!' My mother exclaimed, as I rushed past her out the door.
'Mum I know!!' I quickly grabbed my keys and opened the garage door to see Dad. 'See you later!' I called out. Amongst the drilling and loud noise I just about heard a response; 'have a lovely day chick.'
My dad was a hard worker. Self employed, he quit his job a year ago after making a tremendous breakthrough in the world of artificial intelligence, deciding to patent his ideas alone and tackle the challenges as an individual. His ex-boss was none other than the leading Mark Craig, top A.I developer and creator of what we know today as 'house-bots' - the robotic maid cleaners who are in every home, and 'have reduced housework load by up to 80%' hoovering and even cleaning the dishes. My fathers passion was in robotics and he had been working on a secret project in the garage of my very home since he left Mark Craig's company 'AInternational' last year. We were sworn to secrecy on the project and I knew little about it all, but all I did know was that our house-bot spoke and had aspects of facial recognition whilst other people's didn't. It was more... human. I guessed this was dads breakthrough that took him to another level above Mark Craig, causing him to leave the company and pave his own path.
Arriving at school, I lurched into class late and was met with many burning eyes. 'Sorry im late sir..' I'm mumbled under my breath as I clattered down into my seat, cursing myself under my breath for drawing unwanted attention to myself.
'Crikey.. even the nerd was late and that's saying something.' Aiden Woodtris. I could feel my cheeks burning bright red and I slumped down a little further into my seat. Why did he have to acknowledge me today of all days? I cursed under my breath again for not washing my hair last night. Mia you nightmare.
After the day was over, I walked home and reflected on the morning with Aiden. 'Nerd?' I thought. 'Mia the Nerd. Is that all people around here really know me as?' I huffed. 'Life must be easy when you're a leggy blonde supermodel.' I thought to myself. I just wouldn't know. Boys overlooked me like I was a piece of dirt on the floor.
Swinging open the front door I called out to let everyone know I was home and as I did so, dad came bursting out of the garage in a fluster, nearly knocking me off my feet.
'MIA!!' He shouted 'you have to come right away, I have to show you this!' Paul was jumping up and down on the spot. 'It's unlike anything you've ever seen! It's miracle work!' He grabbed my arm and pulled me into the garage. Miracle work was quite the understatement.
