Paige crouches to the ground behind a bush legs shaking. The thorny underbrush leaving shallow scratches on her bare arms and legs. She had been on the run for days searching for the camp her mother warned her about.
She stared at the clearing waiting, she had been followed since the border. She thought for a moment and knew that she had to time her next attack perfectly or the lastrygonians in front of her wouldn't hesitate to throw a ball of flaming bronze at her and that didn't exactly sound like fun at the moment.
Although, maybe after she got some sleep she could summon some other monsters for practice.
She had already made it through through much of New York and had been heading south towards Long Island for some time. Thanks to some overly friendly locals, and a crap ton of caffeine, she had managed to survive the journey.
She took a breath, and sprang into action. She threw a dagger at one distracting them before sprinting as fast as she could across the clearing and towards the metropolis. She was a few miles outside of the city and already she was anxious about the abundance of creatures the urban area sheltered.
Dodging trees she continued to run until she found a nearly abandoned convenience store parking lot. Hearing the roar of the lastrygonians behind her she began to look for any cars nearby. Sighing she jogs to the road.
She hadn't seen the Stranger yet,
hopefully he wouldn't appear, but she was still a little panicked when the headlights swept across her small form.
She disappeared into the shadows and waited for the car to pass before she chastises herself for missing her opportunity. She continues to walk into the city. She hadn't been there in years but she knew the way as if it had only been yesterday. She scrambles through the back alleys and around secret streets. Skyscrapers looking overhead like giants. Reminding her of the price of failure. She moves along as a more hurried pace now, stopping only to mumble curses at herself. Eventually she makes it through the imposing maze of the concrete jungle and to the base of a large hill.
She can see the dip of the valley up ahead and smiles knowing she's almost there. She sprints up the grassy slope ignoring the protests and burning screams from her muscles as they are pushed to a new level of exhaustion she climbs to the top out of breath.
As she reaches the summit her mind says "yes finally!" And her stomachs growls with the translation "pizza!"
She smiles down upon the camp, the omega of cabins and the strawberry fields in the distance with a glittering lake and deep green forrest complimenting it.
She was thinking she had finally reached safety. If only that we're true...
