When she came to, she immediately noticed that the arrow was gone, but the pain in her shoulder appeared to have intensified, not gone away. As her eyes adjusted to the filtered light, she realized that she lay inside a tent, or some structure. She looked around and   noticed a girl sitting at the end of the bed she lay in. Keila tried to speak but found that she couldn't; her long months among the wolf pack had done their job.

She moaned, and the girl came over to the bed. She turned her right foot out and bowed her head in a curious gesture.
"Would you like some water?" She asked in a high and musical voice. Kiela nodded and the girl poured a cup from the pitcher beside her bed. She helped Kiela sit up and pressed the cup against her mouth. The girl's long brown braid swung over her shoulder as she bent over. Kiela took several grateful swallows of the cool liquid.
"Thank you." She said, her voice raspy from disuse.
"You're welcome." the girl replied. "You are have been asleep for three days. the healers weren't sure whether you would make it."
Kiela sat up, gasping as the pain in her side flared. "where am I?"
"This is the village of Kithna. My name is Kym."
"I'm Kiela," She replied. She was scanning the girl, trying to guess what her other form would be. She sniffed the air but the girl's scent was unusually barren. It left a void in the scent map that she was unused to. Kiela was startled back to reality when Kym shifted her position, and then smiled in apology when Kiela grunted in pain. "What is your animal?" she asked. Kym's eyes flickered, as if this was a strange question.

"My totem is Shawmrek, the Rabbit."

Now it was Kiela's turn to be confused. "Not your totem," she said, "your...Oh!"
She broke off her speech and her eyes went round with surprise. The whole time she had been attuned to the scent path in the air, but the scent brought upon the wind was not that which she was used to.

The realization hit her like a stone wall.

They don't shift.
