Mr. Thompson was lonely. He and his wife had divorced some years ago, and he didn’t have many friends. That’s why he had the coffee shop. He had discovered when he was very young that being around happy people gives a similar effect to being happy yourself, but required less energy. At seventy eight, he was all about conserving his energy. So he poured his heart into the 24-hour coffee shop, hoping to bring someone else happiness. Secretly, he made a Christmas wish: to be reminded what love looked like.
On Christmas Eve, he had been sitting at the counter for hours without customers when a lady with a cherry red mottled wool coat and fashionable brown boots entered the shop and requested a latte. He was surprised that he had gotten just the one customer, but then just a few minutes later a man with a puffy white coat opened the door.
To Mr. Thompson’s surprise, the man sat next to the lady in the empty shop. To Mr. Thompson’s surprise, the man seemed to make the sad-looking lady smile. To Mr. Thompson’s surprise, he got gifts that Christmas - two thank you’s and a front row seat to the blossoming of true love.
